Where will Manny land in 2009?

The Giants have entered the bidding for free-agent superstar Manny Ramirez, SI.com has confirmed.

KPIX-TV reported Friday that the Giants have made a three-year offer with an option for a fourth year.

The Dodgers remain interested in Ramirez, and a bidding contest between the two great West Coast rivals could loom. The Dodgers originally offered the slugging savant $45 million over two years, but later withdrew that offer. They will have to do better than that to have chance to retain his services.

While the Angels have suggested publicly that they won't be bidding for Ramirez, some baseball people aren't writing them off. There also appears to be one or two other American League teams on the periphery of the bidding. The Yankees, after signing Mark Teixeira to an eight-year, $180-million contract, are not among them.

The media for off season news have now become a bunch of gossiping yentas with little to no confirmation about anything.

so true ... so true. Puppets on the string of the puppet king Bore ****.

January 2, 2009  02:17 PM ET

3 years with 4th year option... the Dodgers will not match that number of years for someone who will be 37 by next season and is an abortion to watch in LF.

January 2, 2009  02:20 PM ET

Boras does it again... puts the Red Sox up against the Yankees for Teixeria and the Dodgers and Giants for Manny. I hate the guy... but he is very smart about getting him and his agents their $$$.

January 2, 2009  02:21 PM ET

Angels??? They have Vlad, Mathews Jr., Hunter, and Rivera as their OF/DH core. Oh... I see, Manny at 1st. HAHA

January 2, 2009  02:24 PM ET

oh jon heyman, how you love to stir the pot

January 2, 2009  02:36 PM ET

Another press release from Scott Bora$$ office disguised as news by virtue of passing through the keyboard of Jon Heyman. I can believe that the Giants are desperate and panicky enough to sign Diver Ramirez to a 4 year deal, they have one of the worst front offices in MLB. They were stupid enough to give Randy Johnson twice what anyone else would. Manny would love this deal because he could continue to feast on the awful NL West pitching and San Francisco has the lamest sports coverage in the country.

January 2, 2009  02:41 PM ET

Sorry, the Giants will never sign Manny. He's not old enough yet.

January 2, 2009  02:51 PM ET

the fourth year is supposedly a club option. That makes it a three year deal. As for Manny not being old enough, that's simply the comment from a fan that doesn't know anything about the Giants. Most of the players on the team now are young and their farm system is stacked. They're just filling in a couple of positions where the kids aren't ready to make a run in 2009. They're not compromising their long range goals by trading any of the kids. As a Giant fan I'm not going to complain about their team making a run at it.

Man, it must suck to be a Giants fan. Havent won anything in 55 years, your only Super Star is a cheater, guys blowing in your ear and winking at you while they are eating a hot dog with one big bite.

I'd rather sign Barry Bonds

Haha. Right, he really lead that team. They had their chance in 2002, after that it was all about Barry. Get Bonds back then!

Actually, your homophobia notwithstanding, we have won something, a gorgeous ball park that us real fans cannot afford to attend more than once a year.

Pot, kettle. I'll let you 2 get acquainted.

Clemens, Pettitte, Giambi, Knoblouch, and so on........

January 2, 2009  03:48 PM ET

I notice that no money is mentioned. A 3-year deal at less than $70 million is not going to get it done, and I sincerely doubt that the Gnats will go that high. Again, a false bidding war designed to up the Dodgers offer. If Colletti is smart, he'll remove the Dodgers from the bidding, and announce they're going after pitching. We'll see.......

Who cares about manny really. The yankees are done and thats all that matters. Everything else is white noise

.396 17HR 53 RBI in 53 games.....say no more

rxmeister, your comments are right on. The Giants have done nothing this year but spend on immediate needs with short term deals. They have money, and are fully invested in their rebuilding project. There is a big pipeline of talent, which many of the other clubs have been attempting to acquire. Further, the Giants biggest need was bullpen, which alone, should add 7-10 wins.
