The Yankees are fielding trade offers for corner outfielders Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher. There's been some speculation they might consider trading Hideki Matsui, too, but he has a full no-trade clause and is coming off knee surgery, so there's really no way to trade him.

A logjam at the corners was created when the Yankees surprised a lot of folks and signed Mark Teixeira to an eight-year, $180 million contract. Swisher previously had been penciled in as the Yankees' first baseman but now becomes part of a crowded mix of accomplished corner outfielders. Swisher is a versatile player and can play some center field, as well. Some National League teams may be interested. However, Nady's trade value is higher after a better offensive season, so he may be just as likely to be dealt. Nady, acquired by the Yankees in a midseason trade with the Pirates, combined to hit .305 with 25 home runs and 97 RBIs for the year, while Swisher finished at .219 with 24 home runs and 69 RBIs for the White Sox before being dealt to the Yankees after the season.

Johnny Damon isn't in the trade mix, as the Yankees need him to be their leadoff hitter and part of a center field rotation. The other in-house candidates for center field are Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner.

Read the writing on the wall... Yankees are trying to free up space for Manny! Then after 2009 when Matsui and Damon are gone ($26 free), they will get Holiday!

January 7, 2009  04:38 PM ET

Get rid of either Nady or Swisher possibly for some relief help, (I guess they really didn't expect to sign Teixiera after the Swisher trade). Then sign Manny. All BS aside, they have the dollars to do it, especially because they're under last year's payroll. So what if they have a higher payroll than last year. They could even sign another starter if they wanted to.

On another note, put joba back in 8th, and go to battle, although the bullpen should be pretty solid already, this would devastate.

I there any chance of, for instance, Nady to the Giants for Randy Winn? I've heard a rumor of that before, and Winn is considered a "plus" fielder in CF, I believe. Such a deal would allow the "kids" (Gardner/Cabrera/Jackson) more time to mature and be ready for the future. What do you think?

I don't see much of a desire by the Yankees to trade one of their corners, just to pick up another outfielder of something like 8 million who's salary they would be paying.

How about Nady for Randy Winn? I've heard this suggested before, and Winn is supposedly considered a "plus" fielder in CF. Winn is no stiff offensively, either, and this move gives more time for the "kids" (Gardner, Cabrera and Jackson) to mature before they have to play CF regularly.

What do you think?

"Swisher is a very versatile player and can play come centerfield, as well"... come centerfield Heyman??? Spell check homie

Dude... nobody wants Randy EFFing Winn. Trade Nady & Swisher for a starting pitcher, move Joba as Mo's set up and SIGN MANNY!!!

Why trade Nady? Other than Damon, he's easily most productive outfielder out there, especially with Abreu gone. Swisher + Cabrera +Gardner wouldn't be missed.

....Matsui, how about you agree to go back to Japan, and retire the right way infront of all your loyal fans... and let us Yankees fans have MANNY as our DH!?

Dude ... we get it - you want the Yanks to sign Manny. It ain't gonna happen. You sound like George Costanza in Seinfeld, when he had some trades lined up to land Griffey AND Bonds, and it wasn't going to cost all that much...

The Yanks will score enough this year, we don't need Manny and the distractions (his new music group). The guy whined about being in a fishbowl in Boston, you really think he'd enjoy the fishbowl in the Bronx? I don't care where he's from, Manny doesn't want the pressure of playing in New York. And the Yankees actually DON'T need him.

Why on earth would you want a slacker like Manny Ramirez? The Pride of the Yankees would disappear in a puff of rosin the first time he loafed on the way to first or jogged after a ball.

Dude .. we get it - you want the Yankees to sign Manny. It ain't gonna happen. You sound like George Costanza working on possible trades to get Griffey AND Bonds - and it wouldn't really cost that much (we're talking mid 90's here...).

And we don't need Manny and the Distractions (his music group when his baseball career is over). He hated the fishbowl existence in Boston, and it'd be worse in New York. The Yanks will be fine without him - adding $20M++ that it would take would cause a revolt in MLB. And Holliday? Do you just pick the top free agent every year, and assume he'll end up in New York?? Eventually (as in the next 18 months) the Yanks are going to have to replace Jeter at SS (waiting for Yankee fans to blow a gasket). His D is terrible - and he needs to move for the team to get better. But he won't. Selfless my ****...
