Right-handed starting pitcher Tim Redding is on the verge of signing with the Mets. Redding is expected to receive a one-year deal for $2.25 million, plus incentives.

The Mets have been pursuing a host of pitchers and will still be looking for a frontline starter. Their top two targets for that spot remain Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez, with Randy Wolf the backup plan. The Mets also have been talking to Freddy Garcia and future Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez.

Redding did an admirable job for the Nationals last season, going 10-11 with a 4.95 ERA for the last-place club. But the team non-tendered him because it figured he could receive $3 million through arbitration.

Redding, a native of upstate New York, was also pursued by the Orioles, Rockies and a few more teams.

This is good for the Mets, IMO.. Redding is coming off a very solid season, he had a foot injury that really killed what could've been an even better season; in the 2nd half we went 2-8 because of that injury, opposed to his stellar 1st half performance of 8-3. (The 1st/2nd half splits are pre and post All Star Game for those wondering). He was also 3-1 vs the Phils, which is nice.

If for some reason Redding faulters, there is always Jon Niese, the team's top pitching prospect who would've been the 5th starter anyway.. And also its only a $2.5m for one year deal, so the contract is not a problem.

Nice #5 for only $2.25... I'd still bring in Pedro to see if he has anything left. Let Redding be the long man eventually. Next up, get Lowe or Ollie

The Mets should start spring training with 6 or 7 starters. They need a couple of guys who would not mind starting in AAA Buffaloe to begin the season. There are always injuries and these guys always get a chance. I like Redding, and I would like to see Wolf also. What about Livan Hernandez?

I want the metropolitans to sign Derrik Lowe and Freddy Garcia, then bring Martinez in to fill in as an El Duque type. Relief pitcher and spot starter. They should also try to trade for Andrew Jones to play left feild. They need to make some serious moves, not just sign some expensive closers. Omar Minaya's really been messing things up in the organization the last few years.

Can we sign Manny and Lowe or Perez before we worry about a 5th starter?!?!?!

I think we should look at Livan Hernandez as well as Pedro. An invite to spring training with the possibility of starting the season at AAA. There needs to be a few back up starters. If Maine comes back strong and Pelf is as good as he looked last year, we will be in good shape, but there are always injuries.

nice #5 but if hes forced to 4th or 3rd there done idc bout rodriguez or puptz now there an average bullpen there rotation is not so far--- santana, maine,TBD!,TBD!,REDDING!!! THAT NOTHING MET FANS SORRY

oo sorry forgot bout pelfrey

Will Perez be the starter he was under Dan Warthen? Will he always be as up and down as he was in the first half? He might be worth hanging on to if he can keep his composure and not catch the ball bare handed.

Very sensible move by the Amazins...this could be a steal.

Time to see what Niese can do. Ollie sometimes looks like Sandy Koufax, sometimes like Sandy Duncan.

There will be no Manny in Flushing. Lowe maybe, or Perez, I don't think we can get hurt with either one. I think we need a back up infielder, and had thought of Berroa until he went to the Yanks. Is Eckstien ready to be a back up?

You think Miayas messed things up in NY? If they did all the moves you want the team would be more screwed up than ever before so who are yout to rip Minaya?

Redding is terrible! Good luck watching 5 innings of agony every 5th day, then the gradual demise of an exhausted bullpen.

I'd rather have Otis Redding, brother. He could jam out some "Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay" at least.
