Omar screwed up when he signed Louis Castillo, yet he got a raise.

Fred rember it is that fans that make you money. Sign Sheets, Perez, and Hudson. NOW. We deserve it. We should not be punished for Omars mistakes.

Very true rabid pro. What a shill Heyman is! That said, the Mets can not afford to only sign Sheets. A team with their resources and revenue has no business relying on a pitcher like that...what a team of their resources CAN afford to do is to take a flier on Sheets in ADDITION to Perez. If they have any designs on serious October baseball, they need to invest, not cut corners. There is a fine line between wise investment and asset management and frugality- the Mets are straddling that line right now.

I also like how the Mets seem to feel as though they're a willow in the wind- bending at the mercy of the market. There's no reason for them to feel less confident about their chances- if they want Ollie- GO AND GET HIM! They've put Ollie in the position of strength with the Lowe deal (no, I'm not saying that they should've gone 4/60, but maybe a larger 2nd bid would've gotten it done), now they have to pay the piper- and Heyman can get his commission from Boras.

Perez looking to get $60M? That is just his agent with his head up his borass again...

Borass got Texiera big money, and screwed the rest of his clients this offseason. Borass could have gotten all his clients paid if he had worked it right - have Tex take the Boston offer, then he would have gotten Manny paid by NY. Boston would be more inclined to re-sign Tek, and maybe Lowe, then Atlanta or the Mets would have paid Perez. As it stands now, Borass is persona non grata in Boston, and that has killed the market for his clients since other teams know that they're not bidding against the Red Sox.

Best strategy IMHO, is to sign Sheets for 2 years with incentives and then sign Wolf or Garland. Between those three (with Redding in the picture), I think we can find 2 starters and have the third and Niese as insurance. Plus, we get a long reliever or two.

I like ollie bc he is 27, just getting ready to enter his prime as a pitcher... and despite his inconsistencies, on his good days he is one of the best pitchers in the league... his problems are his bad days... that said, 4 years would be the max i would invest, and im surprised he would want more (wouldnt boras rather a 30-31 year old pitcher potentially in his prime to be a fa?)...
sheets is good, put up a great season last year (31 starts, 198 innings, 5 complete games, 3 shutouts), but has the injury history... if you sign sheets, which isnt a bad option due to his lower demand than ollie, you have to also sign a wolf or a garland, in addition to a minor league deal for a freddy garcia... you have to assume that sheets will only make 20 starts, and you dont want redding being your number 5, forcing you into neise for 13-14 starts or a combination of no-names as the mets have had in the past... sheets + wolf allows redding to slide into the long relief role ala darren oliver, and then he could step in and make some starts when sheets inevitably gets hurt... and dont forget maine is also coming off surgery and we havent heard anything about his progress, garcia in the minors is good insurance

Mets need a Starting pitcher. Ben Sheets would be a HUGE gamble , however it is one that should be taken. His potential far outweighs Perez's.
Mets need a slugging outfielder, Manny would be ideal, Griffey would be palatable, Andruw Jones NO <fill in the blank> Way.

If the Mets were hoping to lock up Oliver Perez quickly after losing out on Derek Lowe to the Braves, that appears unlikely. The Mets were originally looking to retain Perez for $30 million over three years but currently have no offer on the table and believe Perez is still seeking about double that, in other words about $60 million (for five years).

The Mets appear to be in no rush to throw out an offer now for Perez, as that strategy didn't necessarily serve them well in the case of Lowe.

Perez remains by far the Mets' first choice for their final rotation spot, but club executives don't appear quite as confident in their chances as before and are surveying other viable starters. That includes Ben Sheets now, as well as Randy Wolf and Jon Garland. Mets people love Sheets' talent but appear to be taking a second look at his medical history, which initially gave them pause.

Some Mets people are now wondering whether one or two years for Sheets might be a better gamble than four or five for Perez, whose resolve to get his asking price probably only strengthened when Lowe -- who's seven years older at 35 -- got $60 million over four years from the Braves after the Mets bid just $36 million for three years.

Mets people may also be worrying whether the Yankees could come back into play for Perez.
