Don't get your hopes up yankees. If you really think Rivera is going to last another 3 years, you must be smoking something good. How old is he now? Between now and then, the yankees will invest some serious money in a closer and even the yankees won't keep two #1 closers on the same team. Besides, the rivalry is getting very intense again and who is to say that he would want to change into a yankee. There are just as many hardcore yankees who will never put on Red Sox uniform and vice versa. Moving to NY hasn't done anything special for Damon.

The Spankmes will never get it. The Sox signed Pedroia (MVP & All star) 4 yrs, Youkilis (3rd in MVP voting & All star) 4 yrs and Papelbon (All star closer) 1 yr for a couple million more than the Spankmes paid for A J Burnett. That says it all. Don't ever mention Cashman in the same breath as Theo!!

<quoted-text>Yankee fans are so dumb. Every year, they spend hundreds of millions, every year they win "December baseball", every year they say someone's best player will be a Yankee in 2-3 years, and every year they win nothing. When are you guys going to realize your team sucks and you won't win another title for at least 86 years?</quoted-text>

Ah, it must be nice to live in never never land.

The Yankees won in 2000, less than ten years ago. Yes, they've been less than stellar in the playoffs of late - but to state that they won't win for 86 years is laughable. The Yankees won 89 games last year ... starting guys like Carl Pavano, Darrell Rasner and Sid Ponson. They've added Sabathia and Burnett, Wang is back healthy - and with Tex providing protection for ARod - the Yankees will be back in the playoff mix this year, and for many years to come. Boston fans who spew this crap are no better than Yankee fans who spew the same idiotic crap. I love the Yanks, but Paps is a Boston boy, and I don't see him leaving for New York. Of course, we have Joba to take over for Mo, so we aren't doing too badly.

Ahhh- Its Sh itter Mcgavin again. The Spankmes should win 159 games a year with their inflated payroll. Give me a Ferrari to race against Toyotas & Yugos and I will win every time. The Spankmes are headed back to late 80's/early 90s losing years, just with an inflated payroll. Worst team money can buy!!! Oh Yeah- Happy Gilmore still says you can kiss his a$$!!!

But.... it's good for the redsox. They gets loads of cash from all the jerseys that sox fans have to buy to keep up with their team.

Signing Pap and keeping him happy is a good thing. This is the prime of Jonathan Papelbon's career, this is as good and as effective as he'll ever be and the Sox have him for the next 3 years. Don't think the Sox are worried about losing him after that.

It's never too old to TP Boras' house, car and yachts. He has acted every offseason like a Halloween ghoul, so trick or treat is only fair. The only problem I have with bringing Tek back is the access this gives Boras to Red Sox players and management. He should be banned in Boston. When I think of what he did to the Sox with Manny, Teixeira, Tek, A-Rod, Damon and others .. . . and there is already discussion by the Sox and Paps agent, likewise for J.Bay, of working out a long term deal, so it could still happen.

Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon struck out 77 while
walking just eight in 2008.
AP

Electric closer Jonathan Papelbon has agreed to a $6.25 million, one-year contract with the Red Sox, SI.com has learned. The sum is a record for a first-year, arbitration-eligible reliever.

The 28-year-old fireballer went 5-4 with a 2.34 ERA and 41 saves last year, when he was paid $775,000. Boston's closer has racked up 113 saves with a 1.84 ERA in his first three seasons on the job, making three straight All-Star teams in the process.

The 28-year-old Papelbon is one of four pitchers to record 30 or more saves in each of his first three full seasons, joining Billy Koch, Kazuhiro Sasaki and Todd Worrell. He is 29 saves from the Red Sox mark of 132 set by Bob Stanley from 1977-89.

The Red Sox have locked up some key pieces over the last two months. Boston gave MVP second baseman Dustin Pedroia a six-year, $40.5 million contract in December and star slugger Kevin Youkilis a four-year, $41 million deal last week.

In other news, Mariners star starter Erik Bedard settled for a $7.75 million contract.

</intro>
