The Mets have placed an offer on the table for free-agent lefthander Oliver Perez, SI.com has learned, and are hopeful to have an answer in coming days regarding their prime pitching target.

The Mets are believed to have improved their original thought, which was for about $30 million over three years. But it isn't certain what their latest offer is.

Perez remains the Mets' top choice for the final spot in their rotation, though the team has remained in contact with three other free-agent pitchers -- Randy Wolf, Jon Garland and Ben Sheets. They know they'd have competition for Wolf (Dodgers), Garland (Diamondbacks) and Sheets (Rangers, possibly Yankees) but aren't sure what other teams are competing for Perez.

The Mets had been hopeful to land free agent Derek Lowe earlier but were surprised when the rival Braves outbid them by $24 million, landing Lowe with a $60-million, four-year contract. Perez, 27, is eight years younger than Lowe, though not quite as consistent.

Mets GM Omar Minaya would love to import Perez, so the Mets are not likely to take one of the other pitchers unless he feels his chances for Perez are gone.

I'm a long-suffering Met fan. And I'm sick to my stomach that the Mets have done nothing since
signing K-rod. It's only a matter of time before the Top Free Agents left will go else were.
I never understood why the Mets never finish what they started. They started out good with the signing of K-rod. Then it's been all down hill after that. Watching all the Teams around them make up grades and them do nothing. Just proves to me that they don't care about the Fans they just care about keeping they payroll down. I bet if there were a few 40-something over-the-hill players out there the Mets would be all over them.Way to go Mets another lousy season to look forward to.

Grummpy...dude...they did trade for another closer in Putz the day after. If you read metsblog.com they have a report that the Phillies want Alou and/or Nomar. Get your facts straight and if u don't want to be a fan don't be. No one is forcing you to be a Mets fan.

January 23, 2009  08:16 PM ET

I disagree that the Mets have had a bad off-season. They've made their bullpen one of the best in the league, both by addition (K-rod, Putz, Green) and subtraction (Heilman, Schoenweiss), without giving up any significant parts of last year's team (which was only a game out of first place, in case you forgot). They signed Redding for the back of the rotation and Garcia to a minor-league deal to provide insurance. Both signings are good and should allow Neise another year in AAA. Frankly, I'd be happy enough going to camp with a rotation of Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, Redding, Garcia, with Neise at AAA and ready to step in if anyone gets hurt. Add Perez or Sheets to that mix and it'd be very strong.

That said, I only want Perez back at the right price. 5 years/$60 million (his asking price) is double what he's worth. 3 years/$33 million or so is probably about right. Otherwise, I'd rather give 2 years to Sheets than 4 or 5 to Perez.

January 23, 2009  08:31 PM ET

Why do we need to improve on a offer for a picther that was almost sent to triple A.
I don't want Perez unless it makes sense. Three years at 30 millions is over the top for a very shaky picther. I hope it comes with a performance guarantee to reach the 10 million a year.
I rather get ben sheets for cheap 1-2 years contact. I have a bad feeling this could be luis castillo contract all over again.

January 23, 2009  09:13 PM ET

I happen to like Perez because he pitches well against Yanks, Phillies and Braves and he's 27. He's inconsistent, but has great stuff. I'd still rather have Perez at 4 years 50 million than Sheets for 2 years. Sheets is never healthy and when he goes down next year, the same people who want him now, will be talking about how dumb Omar is for banking on a guy with a history of injury problems. The Mets need a second lefty in the rotation with Philadelphia in the division who will be even more left handed this year than last year with Ibanez replacing Burrell. Lefties hit .158 off of Perez last year. We can't count on Niese being ready so Perez guarantees us a 2nd lefty. After we sign Perez, if we can get Sheets for one year, then I'd take that chance even if it's 1 year, 13 million. We really need Manny Ramirez. He would completely take all of the pressure off of Wright and Beltran and would change that entire lineup. After this season, Wagner and Delgado come off of the payroll which is about $22 million which would cancel out Manny's salary. Manny would give us the best lineup in the NL and would take attention away from the Yankees big offseason. We are going into a new ball park for God sakes...SPEND THE MONEY

Omar should not give in to Boras> he is not having a good off season(except for the signing of Texiera). Times have changed in the world, and it has trickled down to sports. Boras creates his own market and Omar should not be fooled. Nobody is bidding on Perez, stick to the original three year offer, OR better yet leave Perez for some one else. Take a chance on Ben Sheets. Injury vs Inconsistency. Go for Sheets....and Omar still needs a bat. Offer Manny a 2 year guarantee of 15million per.......another 15-20 in reachable incentives with a two year total of reachable goals to have third year kick in.....keep Manny happy and more importantly hungry..... if Manny hits his numbers the Mets will compete, if not win the world series. Again Omar should dictate to Boras the contracts, not be bowing to Boras's absurd demands.

January 23, 2009  09:48 PM ET

No way Manny signs for 2 years 15 per with incentives. He can go to LA for 2 years at $45 million right now. Offer Manny 2 years at 50 million with a performanced based option for a 3rd year with a $5 million buyout. That guarantees Manny $55 million over the first 2 years. 4 years for a 27 year old Perez is not absurd at all. 4 years at $50 million is fair.

"though not quite as consistent" as Lowe - HAHAHAHAHAHA

Thanks for the understatement, Jon

January 23, 2009  11:03 PM ET

Lowe is old and he can only get worse at this point. 2 years from now, that will be a bad deal

January 23, 2009  11:15 PM ET

The Mets need Perez back. Flat out. If they add him and Joe Beimel, they'd be set aside from maybe finding a taker for Castillo if that's humanly possible.

January 23, 2009  11:16 PM ET

Santana, Maine, Phelphry, Redding, Garcia

with Neise and Parnel to be given a chance if need be. maybe a mid season acquisition.

i could see them bringing back pedro at a lower cost.

What they should do, other than sign manny, is go hard after peavy. trade anyone, except fernando martinez, and bring back the second best pitcher in the NL to go along with first.

January 23, 2009  11:18 PM ET

Lightweight------As a Phillies fan, I am praying the Mets go into the season with "Santana, Pelfrey, Maine, Redding, Garcia".......PLEASE PLEASE.......Garcia??? Good Luck with that!

theyre spending small. i could see them bringing back pedro before perez.

what they should do, other than sign manny, is get peavy in a blockbuster. make it happen, ace up for grabs, and i'm sure he could be persuaded if hes not the biggest fan of new york. make it happen omar, thats what good gm's really do. best 1-2 punch in the bigs. those win you championships.

I used to read John Heyman regularly and admired his work. Now it seems he is only a part of the Boras publicity machine. Every article I read lately is so obviously a story planted by Boras. It seems ridiculous. Whenever Boras wants to get other teams to bid against each other so that his client can get more money, voila, a story appears here by Heyman. Most of which are seemingly made up to promote the Boras machine. In return, Boras feeds Heyman information. It makes me wonder how hard he is working, when seemingly he just talks to Boras and hos office every day and comes up with the latest article. How can anyone believe half this stuff.

January 23, 2009  11:36 PM ET

I do have my facts stright. I'm not saying they had a bad off sesson i'm saying don't stop now.
Be a little more aggressive. Don't sit back a watch whats left go to other teams.
I don't think the Phills are dumb enought to sign Alou. Thats only something Omar would do.

January 23, 2009  11:37 PM ET

It amazes me that in a year where so many quality free agents are on the market with the Mets getting a new stadium and millions upon millions from Citi Group, that the Mets do not aggressively try to sign some of these free agents such as Sheets or Perez. I am not 100% sold on Perez and would be perfectly fine with Sheets but just get it done already. Then would you please go get someone like Manny or Dunn. With Castillo, Schneider and the pitchers position, out bottom third is a joke and that is with the hopes that Delgado, Murphy, Tatis produce at last years level. Our bullpen might be solid but we still need a lot of work.

January 23, 2009  11:43 PM ET

In an off-season where the Mets are moving into a new park, with tons of $$$ coming from Citi Group and coming off of two collapses, I would have thought the Mets would have been more aggressive. Pitching is the number 1 priority and I like our bullpen now. But we need a solid starter. I would not have given Lowe what the Braves did, but either sign Sheets or Perez and finish this process. Then address the offense. With players like Schneider, Castillo and the pitcher, our bottom 3 is weak. Then you have to hope Delgado, Tatis, Murphy produce at last years level. That imo is asking a lot. I would love Manny but wouldn't mind Dunn. He could be our 1B when Delgado's contract expires after 2009.

January 23, 2009  11:46 PM ET

The Mets are going to resign Perez. There are no other takers. It will get done. Garcia will fight for the 5th spot with Niese, Parnell and Redding. Fernando Martinez should get a lot of at bats in the spring with Beltran going to the WBC. May be he will play some this year
