The Yankees are still talking to free agent pitchers Andy Pettitte and Ben Sheets as they seek to add yet another veteran pitcher to their vastly improved rotation. The Yankees are believed to be offering less guaranteed money than the $10 million that was on the table for months for Pettitte but still may prefer to bring him back.

While the Rangers have met twice with Sheets, the Yankees are one of a few teams considering the talented righthander. Sheets has provided a second medical report for teams to review but it isn't known how it differs from the first. His market has been slow despite a career full of accomplishments. At least one of the teams looking at Sheets appears to be hoping to keep it to a one-year deal.

The pitching market is rough right now, as the only remaining free agent starter known to have received an offer of at least three years is Oliver Perez, who received an offer of at least that length from the Mets. Free agents Randy Wolf and Jon Garland are believed to be getting one-year offers in the range of $5-to-7 million, with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks among the pursuers. The Bergen Record first mentioned renewed talks between Pettitte and the Yankees, who already added CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett to their rotation.

Sheets went on the DL a few years back cause he was having migraines

January 24, 2009  08:25 PM ET

Sheets would be a nice pickup for the yankees.. for one year, and club option

January 24, 2009  08:34 PM ET

what, no faith in phil hughes????

January 24, 2009  08:35 PM ET

sheets - one year, incentive laden contract + option yr would be nice

January 24, 2009  08:36 PM ET

Yankees spending money? What's going on here?!!!!

January 24, 2009  08:37 PM ET

Well if Jon Garland is getting a $6.5 million 1 year deal...then the Brewers should shell out about $8 million....that'd be much more worth it than $11 million for Eric Gagne...not to mention I do not want to watch Jeff Suppan pitch for my team anymore...

January 24, 2009  08:37 PM ET

Ben Sheets has a great up side....go get him!

January 24, 2009  08:39 PM ET

Ben Sheets has great upside...if healthy of course. Why not at this point?

January 24, 2009  08:39 PM ET

great...another double post.

January 24, 2009  09:29 PM ET

Sheets would be a great pickup with huge upside.....Phil Hughes will still get plenty of opportunities during the year as no team ever uses just 5 starters.

January 24, 2009  09:31 PM ET

id rather have Sheets at this point than Pettite. the upside is so much greater than an aged, cantankerous, ungrateful Andy. I mean when your known as a second half pitcher who is coming off a terrible second half, it is game over. Give Sheets a one/two year deal, a cance to resurrect his career, who knows it could work out really well for both parties.. Screw Andy and his steroid injecting ass.

January 24, 2009  09:31 PM ET

Since he is always on the DL I guess upside is all that he has. It would be great if they sign him and he ends up like the Carl Pavano experiment. Keep the pepper away from this guy....If he sneezes he will be on the DL.

January 24, 2009  09:32 PM ET

Sheets would be a great pickup for just a 4th round draft pick. He has alot more upside than Pettitte. Hughes will have plenty of opportunities during the year as no team ever just uses 5 starters.

triple post technically sir

QUOTE(#3):

what, no faith in phil hughes????

hughes can still be the fifth starter, if theyre smart and put joba in the pen. if the yanks lead after 7, it will be just like 1996, joba and mo will shut them down

January 24, 2009  09:50 PM ET

If the yanks sign sheets thats world series #27 at the very least...probably 28-32 aswell!

January 24, 2009  09:58 PM ET

The Brewers went into the offseason thinking they'd get 2 - 1st round draft picks and two sandwich picks for Sabathia and Sheets.

If the Yankees sign Sheets ... the Brewers would only get the Yankees 2nd and 4th ... losing the 1st to teh Teixiera signing and 3rd round to Burnett!

January 24, 2009  10:00 PM ET

The Brewers went into the offseason expecting two 1st round picks and two sandwich picks for Sheets and CC Sabathia. If the Yankees sign SHeets now ... the Brewers would only end up with those sandwich picks and the Yankees 2nd and 4th round picks ... much worse then they were expecting since the Teixeira and Burnett signings would take the other two.

the yanks NEED to sign sheets. he will be fantastic. he will get injured but nothing serious. maybe 1 15 day dl stint but thats it. 15-4 from sheets as a yank... cashman get it done
