<body>remember when Mussina was taken entirely out of the rotation on 07 but rebounded with the best season of his career in 08. Remember when CC sabathia started 08 absoutely horrible people claimed dead arm after pitching so many innings the year before, and then rebounded to be absolutley dominant towards the end of the season? I realize all three of these pitchers have different styles, so you can't compare, but because a guy had a rough 11 starts pitching with a sore shoulder doesn't mean you should write him off. I expect Pettitte to come back with an ERA a hair under 4, and be his normal reliable self with a loopy curve ball.</body>

<body>Wishful thinking. A lot of that goes on in baseball every pre-season. In most cases guys like Pettite do not come back to their old selves. He may just as likely be worse. Have you considered that? By the way, Sabathia was still a young, in his prime pitcher--Mussina DID bounce back, but you can't assume minor miracles with limp-arm pitchers.</body>

<body>This is a perfect move for the Yankees. Ben Sheets is much too injury prone to have in the same rotation as AJ Burnett and a young Joba. Andy is a veteran pitcher who will give you 200 solid innings and has a knack for pitching well in big games. I know he had a bad second-half last season but he was dealing with some shoulder issues. He's gotten those taken care of. I look for Andy to be a fantastic number 5 starter and give the Yankees 15 wins this season.</body>

<body>I think this a good deal from both sides. Andy Pettitte has given his all to the team. Last year, he played with a sore shoulder, and, if the hitters had scored more runs, he would have won several more games. SHeets I think an injury risk, another A.J. Burnett. Finally, I think the deal saves face for the team and for Pettitte.</body>

<quoted-text>It never ceases to amaze my why teams continue to sign players based on what they wish them to be despite hard evidence to the contrary. Andy Pettitte will in all probability be the pitcher he was the second half the season, below average. He's not any younger and all this emotional turmoil over negotiations will not help. If the Yanks want an innings eater with an ERA near 5 who will get shelled more than we're used to seeing, then they've succeeded. On a positive note, I think Andy would also be a fabulous left handed specialist out of the pen, especially in the playoffs.Still, I would have rather rolled the dice on Sheets.</quoted-text>

<body>With the exception of last year? Well, that's the whole point, isn't it? What makes you think he will suddenly, at age 36 and his velocity decreasing, be the pitcher he USED to be. And in a big game? No way I'd take him over a healthy Ben Sheets who is STILL in his prime. If you ask the Brewers about Sheets they will tell you what an outstanding pitcher he is. The only negative on him is the issue with his injuries. When he is healthy he dominates. And, of course, they couldn't afford him--certainly no problems for N.Y.. Pettite will end up being the sixth starter.</body>

<body>You mean that experience he had when he was a quality pitcher? He no longer is. It is highly unlikely he'd see an inning in the playoffs. He can talk to the press? So what? I don't think anyone is ever signed for that reason. Ben Sheets is STILL an outstanding pitcher. If he remains healthy, he could probably be the difference in sealing that division for the Yankees AND pitch in the playoffs as well. It's not good to be so taken with a player for what he USED to be.</body>
