Eric Hinske and the Pirates are in serious discussions on a deal that would pay Hinske about $1.5 million for 2009.
The 31-year-old would serve as a backup at both corner outfield spots and first base.
Last season with Tampa Bay, Hinske batted .247 with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs.
MLB.com and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette both mentioned that Hinske was talking to the Pirates.
