Weeks is an interesting case. There are have periods when he has gotten hot and been a tremendous offensive force. But those times have been few and far between. He's quite capable of hitting .270 with 20 hrs with a fair amount of walks and stolen bases. Could push his OBA to upwards of .380, his OPS to the .850 range.

Odd thing is, he doesn't hit well at home. He hit .218 w/5hrs in '07 and .209 w/3hrs in '08 in home games. Milwaukee's a decent hitters park too. He hits about 40 points better with significantly more power on the road. Has 22 hrs in last 125 road games.

Rickie Weeks should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as Robinson Cano. Weeks is a very good player, and I think he will get better, but he does not have nearly the same amount of raw talent as Cano. Yes Cano had a mediocre season last year but I think his $30 million contract had a little to do with that. He has been training hard in DR and has lost weight...he is more focused and will be a beast next year.

This isn't a signing in the way that the Yankees signed CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira. Rickie Weeks was not a free agent, he was simply arbitration eligible, and instead of going to hearing on the case, the two sides - team and player/agent, agreed to a deal instead.

They pretty much met in the middle. Weeks was asking for a few hundred thousand more, the team was offering a few hundred thousand less...

At the very most, the Brewers would have saved 500k or so, but then would have probably ticked off Weeks. Clubs hate going to arbitration with players, it's a very testing process that is taxing on the relationship between the player and the team.

If Weeks could defend well, he'd be a very good player. As is, he should probably be moved to center field, but he's still got a lot of upside and a little time in which to dig it up.

Less than $4 million for a player like Weeks is a decent deal, especially when considering he could break through and be very good in 2009.

Although the signing of weeks can be considered puzzling by some, the move is a good one for the brewers as it keeps a high ceiling player on the roster where they have very little depth. Weeks will continue to be thought of as a high ceiling player as he has pop in his bat as well as very good speed. He is a great candidate for a "change of scenery" for most clubs and may be considered trade bait should the Brewers decide to promote Alcides Escobar (AAA all-star) to the big club. I could see a team such as the angels or the rays as a possible assignment, considering that both have exactly what the Crew needs: starting pitching.

Not much of a baseball fan then ... Weeks is a former 1st round pick of the Brewers. He's been their starting 2B for the last 3 years. High potential player who's disappointed a bit. Still has the ability to be an all-star. Frankly his stats compare fairly well to Cano!

The Milwaukee Brewers avoided arbitration with Rickie Weeks by signing the second baseman to a one-year, $2.45 million contract, SI.com has learned. Weeks can make an additional $75,000 in performance bonuses.

The 26-year-old hit .234 with 14 home runs and 46 RBIs in 129 games last season. Weeks led all National League second basemen with 15 errors.
