Cooperstown-bound pitcher Tom Glavine and the Braves have begun negotiations on a contract that both sides hope will return Glavine to Atlanta. It would be Glavine's 18th season with the Braves and his 23rd season in the majors.

The sides are expected to keep talking through the weekend. Braves general manager Frank Wren, who's already added Derek Lowe, Javier Vazquez and Kenshin Kawakami to the rotation, is also looking for an outfielder to bolster the offense and has several million dollars left to spend.

The Braves have offered Glavine, who is 305-203 lifetime, between $1 million and $2 million, according to MLB.com.

Glavine would prefer not to uproot his family, and the price appears to be right for the Braves. Wren recently lunched with the future Hall of Famer, and manager Bobby Cox and pitching coach Roger McDowell went to see Glavine throw off the mound at his home.

Word is, noted surgeon James Andrews, who performed relatively minor procedures on Glavine's elbow and shoulder, said the pitcher is doing fantastically well. He is expected to be ready to start the season.
