As a Red Sox fan, I have seen Abreu play many times. I find it hard to believe the Mets would not jump at the chance to land him. I know he is not a golden glove outfielder, but he is not a liability. He can hit and drive in runs. I never could understand the great dissatisfaction with him and why he hasn't been signed yet by a team, like the Mets, who really need a leftfielder.

considering the mets had the 2nd best offense in the nl last season, id say they will be fine... lets not forget they must have had a dozen different guys playing the corner outfield spots... even with a platoon in left and church everyday in right, they have a much better offense than with chavez, easley, anderson, pagan, evans, cassanova or cancel (although catchers, i am pretty sure one of them started at least once in the outfield) trot nixon, brady clark, chris aguila... churchs injuries were the result of concussions so after a full off-season of rest, should be better than his post-return numbers (although i doubt as good as his pre-injury numbers)... their starting pitching is just as good (anyone really think that a redding-garcia-niese combo isnt any better than a 4-inning martinez-armas-figueroa-vargas-inset name here combo as a 5 starter; and if you really dont, guess what, they brought back nellie and tony just for you)... the issue was the bullpen, which blew some kind of record 29 games last year... whats the stat, if the games ended after 7 innings, the mets finish 11 games ahead of the phils, if it ends after 8 innings, they still finish 6 up on the phils... they addressed their biggest need - the bullpen... the other need? a clutch hitter... and while abreu might put up very solid stats and respectable numbers, a clutch hitter, he is not... and btw, if you think scrooge would have the highest NL payroll and the 3rd highest in baseball, then you need to go and research who scrooge actually is...

You make all good points. Let me make one:
The mets need an everyday player, everyday hitter in left field.
Moises Alou was too old.
Tatis is a bench player.
murphy is unproven.
Schneider and Castillo are automatic outs.
you have no way of knowing which delgado we will get this year.

You need a left fielder who can hit.
you need a left fielder who can hit.
you need a left fielder who can hit.

mets need abreu. a professional hitter behind david wright who will be motivated to play against the phillies and yankees. he wants to stay in new york.

make it happen minaya. mets could ill afford to have raul ibanez go to the phillies and abreau go to the braves and they do nothing to improve their otherwise average offense other than rob mackowiak. You're not going after manny? fine. Go F'n get abreau, no excuses.

Bobby Abreu hit .296 with 20 homers and 100 RBIs in '08.
AP

The Angels, Braves, Pirates, Reds and Mets are among teams considering star free-agent outfielder Bobby Abreu, who's one of three players to have at least 100 RBIs in each of the past six seasons (the others are Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols) and who could be one of the better bargains in a tight market for hitters.

The Angels have been looking for offense, while the Braves and Reds are in need of an outfielder. The presence of the Pirates and Mets in the field is a tad surprising, but the changing market has brought a couple more teams into the picture. The Dodgers and Mariners have been mentioned before as possibilities, but it appears Los Angeles wants to give the Manny Ramirez negotiations every possible chance.

The Mets have spent their whole winter upgrading their pitching staff, both the bullpen and rotation, but would consider Abreu at the right price. While they'd prefer a right-handed hitter, they do seem to like Abreu's bat. The Mets do want to keep their payroll around $140 million and are not considering Manny.
