Bobby Abreu is headed across the country to the Angels.

Getty Images

Free agent outfielder Bobby Abreu has signed a one-year deal with the Angels, SI.com has learned. The deal is worth $5 million and also includes incentives.

Abreu, who turns 35 next month, joins an accomplished group of outfielders with the Angels that starts with Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter and Juan Rivera, who unlike Abreu are all right-handed hitters. Gary Matthews Jr., another Angels outfielder, is a switch-hitter.

Abreu is the only player in major-league history with 200 home runs, 300 stolen bases, a .400 on-base percentage and a .300 batting average (Barry Bonds and Rickey Henderson hit the first three marks but don't have the .300 career batting average). However, he was caught in a tight outfield market flush with strong hitters. Manny Ramirez and longtime Angel Garret Anderson have yet to sign.

For the Yankees last year Abreu hit .296 with 20 home runs and 100 RBIs. He is a solid defensive right fielder whose one perceived flaw, a reluctance to go near the wall, became an issue last year, especially in the media.
</intro>

I can only hope this trade is a precursor for future moves. The numbers (money/stats) notwithstanding, this is not what the Angels need. AT ALL. Lemme see, ANOTHER outfield bat when the infield can't hit 11 **** total?! Am I the only one not seeing this? It's better than the rumored Jermaine Dye signing, but it still makes no sense at all. The Angels need a big infield bat to make up for losing Tex and Kotchman last year. Now they'll go with Figgins, Izturis, Kendrick, and Morales--2008 total combined HR total of ten. TEN! TEN FRICKING HOME RUNS! That must inspire fear throughout the AL West, dontcha think?

Too bad for Reagins that Dunn signed today--he could have picked him up too. Not too late to grab Dye either. I think the goal should be to start seven outfielders--screw the actual positions. "Hey Mike, you're a great Skipper--figure THIS ONE out, huh."

Help me out here? Why are you worried about big bats in the infield again? The Angels had Teixeira & they still lost to Boston. I wouldn't call Kotchman (12hr with angels) a consistent threat, so who cares about a freaking infielder who can hit HR"s? Table setters create runs too, right? The angels have Abreu, Vlad, and Hunter & Napoli who all hit over 20 HR's. Naps had 49 RBI???s (in only 78 games), Vlad had 91, and Torre 78 & Abreu had 100. That's not huge, but with our pitching & division it should be enough to get to the post season. The post season 9 out of ten times the team on a roll always wins with or with out depth at the plate. As other people have said if it isn't working over the first half the angels have enough pieces to make a big trade in mid season.

My prediction is Bobby Abreu will prove to be the most productive free agent signing this season.

Abreu represents a nice replacement for Mark Teixeira, the Angels free-agent first baseman who signed with the Yankees, Abreu's old team. The Yankees decided against offering Abreu arbitration since he made $16 million last year and could have matched mark that in the arbitration process, based on his consistently excellent numbers, so no draft choice is attached to an Abreu signing.

The Abreu agreement might put a little extra pressure on the Dodgers to re-sign Manny Ramirez, as he was believed to be their top fallback position in case Ramirez winds up going to the Giants or elsewhere.
