Cooperstown-bound pitcher Tom Glavine appears headed back to the Braves for a 17th season after making progress Monday in negotiations with his longtime team. Glavine, who also pitched five seasons with the Braves' rival New York Mets, is said to be "moving closer to a deal," by people familiar with the talks.
Glavine's intention to pitch for the Braves and no one else at this point has been fairly well known, but negotiations still have been going for more than a week as the sides try to hammer out a fair deal. The Braves lost longtime star John Smoltz to the Red Sox this winter but have imported starters Derek Lowe, Kenshin Kawakami and Javier Vazquez to solidify their rotation.
The Braves reportedly initially offered Glavine about $1 million guaranteed, but it's believed the sides have since compromised. After an uncharacteristic season in which Glavine went 2-4 with a 5.54 ERA and was hampered by arm trouble, he underwent shoulder and elbow surgery in the offseason but was said to be throwing well in sessions at his house in recent days. He holds a 305-203 career record.
Atlanta is trying to sign a veteran outfielder, as well. According to MLB.com, GM Frank Wren met Monday with all-time great Ken Griffey Jr., who will decide between Braves or Mariners, his first team. Griffey is showing signs of preferring the Braves (reportedly, he called them) for family reasons. Garret Anderson, the longtime Angels outfielder and another productive hitter, will likely sign with the team that Griffey doesn't go to, either Seattle or Atlanta.
