The Los Angeles Dodgers made another offer to Manny Ramirez on Wednesday, SI.com confirmed.
The Dodgers' latest offer is like their original offer in that it's for $45 million over two years, but the new twist is that Ramirez could opt out after one year. Ramirez would be paid $25 million in 2009 and $20 million next season if he exercises his player option.
This proposal may be more enticing for Ramirez because it would give him the ability to become a free agent next winter while allowing him the option of staying two years. It is believed the opt-out was added at Ramirez's reqest.
There's another upgrade to this offer, as well. In the Dodgers' original $45 million proposal, he was to be paid $15 million the first year and $22.5 million the second year, with a team option for $22.5 million with a $7.5 million buyout for the third year.
Ramirez was initially thought to be seeking a four- or five-year deal, starting at $25 million per season.
Ramirez rejected a one-year, $25 million proposal from Los Angeles three weeks ago. The team also offered him salary arbitration in December, but Ramirez turned that down, too.

Any who balks at $45 million should have their balls introduced to a bat.

I love how some fans on this site say things like, "hey, just give him 75 or 80 million" whatever. Yeah, it's easy to say that when it's not your money to hand out so easily. There are limits. It is a business, and McCourt is not one of the richest owners. And let's face it, Manny is not exactly the kind of guy you can count on in the long run. Kind of like investing a large sum of money right now in Citi bank.

It's supply and demand Manny. You may supply a lot of nice appearances at the plate but there isn't much demand for your cr*p. Take the deal and get on with it.

Why on earth they're offering this known quitter anything more than a one year deal for 15 million is beyond me. Who else is going to pay him? The Dodgers should be congratulated for bidding against themselves, all in the name of placating the ego of a 36 year old child.

How I wish the Dodgers would reduce their offer to $20mm/yr due to the bad economy (Calif. is sucking wind for sure). Manny would turn to San Fran. San Fran should tell him he's good to go for $15mm/year for two years --- once again citing the economy. What would he do? Sit out the year? No way. The Yankees spending and players union are ruining baseball. As well as steroids. $15mm is enough for an aging superstar who sometimes lies down on a team (like Boston, paying him "only" $20mm/yr) and cannot rely on steroids to artificially extend his career. Abreau went for $5mm after $16mm. Let Manny "suffer" with the rest of us. Give the poor guy $15mm/yr. He's already missed the beginning of spring training.
Unfortunately, the Dodgers would suck without him and, thus, will pay him.

I doubt this will be going on much longer. Seems to me they're stuck with each other or Mr. Ramirez would be playing some where else right now. I think if it wasn't for the Boras effect, this deal would have been done already.

They ought to offer him $1.00 per season. That is about all he is worth! This guy has no heart or commitment to anybody except himself. If they give him this deal, he will bolt after 1 season while taking the rest of the money. He'll probably have an average year and say that nobody likes him so he can't play for them. When are these bozos going to open their eyes and see what a fool this dude is and that he is worth it! There are many players out there that can take his place, especially in the field and even be a better hitter and do if for much less. He probably needs all the money because he has blown what he has. Lack of being able to count past 1! What fools baseball owners and admin are in these matters!

The Dodgers still have the upper hand as Manny has no other prospects. The Giants aren't serious as nobody wants to deal with Boras, so it's the Dodgers with the current offer or nothing. Manny can't reject this offer because, if he does, LA will move on without him.

as a dodger fan id love to have manny back but for $25 or 20 million a year?!? if players like bobby abreu and pat burrell are getting paid less than $10 million i dont think manny deserves more than $15 million. I know he saved the dodgers last year and all but the dodgers and its ownership isnt in the best financial situation right now and nobody other than the dodgers really wants manny. the dodgers have essentially no competition for manny. if manny wont play for less that $20 million he can stay at home.

Are you people insane? Let him stay home? Manny had an OPS+ of 219 in Doger Blue last season, meaning, essentially that he was worth almost TWICE as much to his team as Bobby Abreu was. This deal is great for the Dodgers because they can pay him for '09 what they wanted to pay him anyway, and he won't dog it because he'll be playing for his next contract. And if their are no new suitors next offseason, and he diecides to stick around in '10, all the better, because he'll still be playing for that next big contract. This is a win, win.
It's just unfortuanate the Red Sox couldn't forsee all this and written his first contract with two player options instead of the teams ones it contained.
