<intro>
Manny Ramirez's new $45-million, two-year Dodgers deal is worth $42,005,723 according to the union filing obtained by SI.com.

Ramirez is to be paid $25 million for 2009 and $20 million for 2010. But the actual payouts are as follows: $10 million in '09, $10 million in '10, $8.33 million in '11, $8.33 million in '12 and $8.33 million in '13. He is to receive no interest on the deferred payments, bringing the value down nearly $3 million from $45 million to $42 million.

For Ramirez, the key is the ability to void thee contract after 2009, at which point he can become a free agent.

A full no-trade provision is also in the contract.
</intro>

          <quoted-text>The fallacy in the analysis is the assumption the the future value of a dollar is less than today, that inflation will cause an uninvested dollar to lose value over time. While that has been the stronger trend over the years, there is no proof that it will continue to be the case in the coming five years. In fact, deflation may set in, in which case the real value of the contract goes up as a dollar is worth more when prices drop, so it becomes more difficult to obtain that dollar and pay that salary. The argument is really a red herring. What the real issue in the contract boils down to is whether or not Manny or McCourt will benefit from being owed/making deferred payments...everyone is assuming it will be McCourt, but it could in fact be Manny. What if MCCourt defaults...to settle his obligation to Manny he may have to give up part of the team...then Manny may in fact reap a huge benefit. It's all speculative and only time wil tell.</quoted-text>

Its too bad you really don't understand the concept of the present value of money, and are trying to argue that someone else doesn't know what he's talking about. Perhaps an example will help you to understand.

Pretend that Manny has a contract that defers payment of $100.00 for one year. In one year, he will have $100.00. Now, that $100.00 he receives in one year might be worth more than $100.00 is worth today (although the odds of that being the case are very remote), he will still have only $100.

However, if he gets $100.00 today, and puts it in a savings account that gives him a return of 1% interest per year, he will have $101.00 in a year. Now, again, in one year, $101.00 might be worth more than $101.00 today, or it might not, but it will always be worth more than $100.00.

For Ramirez, the key is the ability to void the contract after 2009, at which point he can become a free agent.

A full no-trade provision is also in the contract.
