If you have a loose billion dollars sitting around and want to buy an NFL team, now is the time to jump in. Three teams -- the Jaguars, Steelers and Rams - could reportedly be sold this offseason.

Owning an NFL team has to be the greatest job in the world. But which of the three teams would you want to own? Here are my rankings; weigh in with your own.

1. Pittsburgh Steelers - Mark Cuban recently said he wasn't interested in buying the Steelers because a small-market team was at a disadvantage in the NFL. That makes about as much sense as trading for Jason Kidd. Obviously the Steelers can win. They won Super Bowl XL.

If Wall Street financier Stanley Druckenmiller pulls off the purchase of the team, he'll have his quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, under contract for several years and a bright young coach in Mike Tomlin.

But the reason the Steelers are the choice team is the tradition and fans. The Steelers are Pittsburgh. Win in that town and you're a god. Lose in that town and you're still pretty cool.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars - Or should I say L.A. Jaguars? Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver denied a Philadelphia Daily News report that New Jersey-based billionare C. Dean Metropoulos is negotiating to buy the team. But multiple reports have indicated Weaver has financial issues and you have to wonder if Jacksonville can sustain a team. Even if the latest reports are true and the team isn't for sale, at some point, Weaver will have to seriously consider letting go of the Jags.

Fortunately for whoever owns this team, it's going to be a very good team in the short run. If quarterback David Garrard can keep playing mistake-free football, their running game and defense make them a bona fide contender in the AFC.

3. St. Louis Rams - Reports and denials have also been flying around St. Louis this year. Like Jacksonville, most speculate a buyer could consider moving the Rams back to Los Angeles.

But if you're a billionaire, does either city thrill you? I don't care how well the Rams play, St. Louis is too much of a baseball town, and we still have no real evidence Los Angeles can support an NFL team.

Just for fun, here are my rankings of the top five teams I'd want to own.

1. Miami Dolphins - South Beach. Working with Bill Parcells wouldn't be much fun, but he'll be gone by next year. Parcells typically leaves the cupboards stocked, so when the Dolphins eventually win you take the credit. Ricky Williams is the only big negative.

2. Dallas Cowboys - You'd instantly be the highest-profile owner in the NFL. New stadium, great history and a loaded team. And you'd be the first to hear who Tony Romo is dating.

3. San Diego Chargers - The weather is reason enough. The nucleus of young star players is a big bonus.

4. Houston Texans - Sweet stadium. A potentially strong fan base. And they're about to break through and have a winning season.

5. Washington Redskins - Anyone following Daniel Snyder will be an instant hero in D.C.

I would buy the greatest team in the history of football the Pittsburgh Steelers !

The thing people continue to miss about LA is this: with the exception of the Clippers & Kings, if you put out a product that has a chance to succeed, people in LA will come out and see it. So, the Jags would be a great fit should they leave Jacksonville. LA will support an NFL team. They just cannot be run they way Matt Millen has run the Lions. Oh, BTW, the Steelers are NOT the greatest team in NFL history. Before 1972, they NEVER sniffed the postseason, even BEFORE the expansion era (i.e., the 1960s). It's either Green Bay or Chicago.

I love the part when you say..." when the Dolphins eventually win"
HA ! HA ! eventually meaning like 2014 right ?
Good blog AP.

Without doubt I would buy the RAIDERS; I ma a lifelong fan and I think I would get a new stadium deal just because there ia new owner (read between the lines).

July 10, 2008  03:56 PM ET

I would also bring in a good GM, sign Kiffin to a long term deal and let Oaktown know we ain't leaving and I would put a owner's box in the Black Hole.

I would have to go with Pittsburgh. Well established fan base which will generate tons of money in merchandise sales.

You wish!! How mant titles do you have?? I beleive the packers have 12
and they won the 1st 2 SBs, and they have the most prestiges stadium, and sell out every game, even i fthey are losing. Id go on but you get the points.

When you talk about great teams.....remember the 1950 Cleveland Browns who won the NFL Championship in their FIRST SEASON in the league. They then proceeded to play for the NFL Championship every year from 1950 to 1957. They never had a losing season until 1974. Of course they never made it to a Super Bowl unless you count the baltimore ravens in 2001.

The Steelers went 40 years before they made the playoffs.

I'd want to own the Redskins. 90+ thousand seats with a 5 year waiting list to get a seat? There's already rumors of the Skins getting another new staium back in DC that would make even MORE money. All that on top of a team that has outright sucked for many years, yet still has rabid fans. We love our skins - the fact that they're on an uptick would make it all the better!

July 10, 2008  06:15 PM ET

I hear u zeek. I wouldn't say we've sucked we beat the cowboys 4 of the last six games (the last one with a backup QB) after having lost the previous 14 games, to any diehard skins fan those are meaningful victories. But the Skins have also been the most profitable franchise the last 9 out of 10 years. you'd be a fool to not want this team, you won't find more loyal fans anywhere in the country.

July 10, 2008  06:28 PM ET

Green Bay does and always will have the best fans, no contest, and besides, we already own the team!!

July 10, 2008  06:59 PM ET

I'm getting sick of Green Bay fans that think because the packers fans get more media time that their the best fans. Its easy to be loyal to a team that u know the history of even if you don't live there. The real test is being a fan when your team is down and out. As bad as the redskins have been over the last 15 years i think it a true testament to the fans that the franchise had been number one for so long.

As a Lions fan, I am begging someone to please, please, please buy the Fords out of ownership, and as a first order of business, fire Matt Millen!

I love how Brownie fans goo waaay back to the pre-Lombardi era. Pittsburgh has a national fan-base! I live in NC and just in my city alone there are 5 or 6 "Steelers-only" bars. You don't see that with too many teams other than maybe New England, Dallas, Green Bay, and Washington. The Browns are still an expansion team. So obviously, I would like to own the Steelers! Amazing Grace, wanna split the shares?

July 10, 2008  09:18 PM ET

Perloff your crazy... ask how many guys who lost in Pittsburgh who cool we thought they were???.. Ask Tommy Maddox.. or Cliff Stoudt or Kordell Stewert how cool we thought they all were after losing???

July 11, 2008  01:08 AM ET

While this is going to be a homer pick, seeing as how I am from Chicago, I have to go with the Bears. The history they have is impressive, they have more hall of famers than any other team, they have won in both the current Era and the pre Superbowl Era. THey also have the best rivalry in ALL of sports, which just happens to be the oldest in the NFL and the second oldest in the NFL as well (Packers and Lions respectivly). Lastly, they play in the 2nd largest NFL market. Sure the stadium is an eyesore from the outside, but at least it still has the original name, how many teams can say that?

July 11, 2008  01:59 AM ET

"The only big negative is Ricky Williams" What!?!??!?!?! How about the Jason Taylor stink, how about no QB to follow Dan Marino.

July 11, 2008  02:09 AM ET

delano, you make the wrong argument about GB fans. The reason they're so loyal is not cuz the Packers are good now, they've had plenty of lean years. They went 24 yrs between division titles. DIVISION TITLES, Not conference titles.

The reason Packer fans are so loyal is THEY'RE THE ONLY TEAM IN TOWN. Milwaukee has the Bucks and Brewers, and neither have much of a history of success. So the only thing they have to live for is the Packers. They talk about what good fans they are, but really they're just pathetic, cuz they have nothing else. It's not really hard to root for the only team in town.

FANMAN- On winning streak

Give me a break, that's like saying the Cubs have 2 World Series titles and 16 NL titles. They don't count if NO ONE REMEMBERS THEM.

Half of those 12 titles were before the end of WWII. How's that for Roman Numerals? 3 more of those titles were in the expansion era of the 60s, but before the SB era.

But by all means, raving about titles against the likes of the Dayton Triangles or the Duluth Eskimos is pathetic. Hell, they didn't even play a championship game until 1933, and GB had already racked up 3 titles by then, w/out winning so much as a title game.
