Brett Favre should just end the drama and come back right now. No more rumors, denials, text messages to journalists or canceled golf appearances. We all know he wants to play. Why wouldn't he? He's physically fine. And there's nothing better going on in Hattiesburg, Miss. Favre has to have realized that by now. Yes,  he said he was tired in March, but this isn't a quarterback who was known for having good judgment.

Every day Favre waits to return causes more of a headache for the Packers. By all indications, Aaron Rodgers has stepped in as a leader in Green Bay. And Packers management supports Rodgers. It was once unthinkable that Favre would force the Packers to trade or release him, but now that seems very possible if he decides to return. Favre is under contract through 2010 and Green Bay isn't allowed to let him dangle if he says he wants to play.

Say Favre does announce he wants to come back, the Packers can't figure out a reasonable trade and have to release him. Then things get scary. The two most QB-needy teams in the NFL happen to be Green Bay's two biggest rivals - Chicago and Minnesota. The Vikings' talent at running back and the offensive line is particularly interesting and with Favre in purple the Vikes would have to be considered an immediate contender in the NFC. Green Bay's worst nightmare is Minnesota coming into Lambeau with Favre at QB and newest Viking Jared Allen injuring Rodgers on the first series.

As for Rodgers, we're hearing a lot about his arm strength and confidence. But he has to run a West Coast offense for 16 games with opposing defenses having a lot of tape on him. There's no indication Rodgers is Steve Young waiting for Joe Montana to move on. One good half against the Cowboys is certainly no reason to turn away a Hall of Famer.

The Packers can't worry too much about Rodgers' feelings. Teams have a very short window to be great and Green Bay was very close to reaching the Super Bowl last year. Rodgers is supposed to be a tough kid. He'll get over it. Rodgers, who told Green Bay fans to "get on board or keep their mouths shut," in Sports Illustrated this week, certainly doesn't want to be the guy who kept Favre from returning to Green Bay.

The best plan for everyone is for Favre to announce he wants to return right now and the Packers to warmly greet him. Even if Favre isn't certain right now, that itch is only going to get worse over the summer. And coming back with another team never works. Think of Joe Namath as a Ram or Emmitt Smith as a Cardinal. Brett Favre doesn't belong in purple, pewter or Seahawks Blue. He belongs in green and gold. Stop putting off the inevitable and bring him home.

He should hang up his cleats and let it go. There are few things sadder then an athelete who has lost it who won't let go. Let it go, Brett and be a supporter of Aaron Rodgers.

Viking Lady, someone sounds a little nervous about her Vikings chances of a Division Title if Favre returns.

Sorry you're concerned Jackson can't get it done for you. Favre, unlike Montana and Smith, isn't finished.

What is finished are your Vikings chances at the NFC North crown.

July 3, 2008  01:26 PM ET

If Brett returns and plays as he did last season, the Packers are a very good team. Brett hasn't lost it yet.

July 3, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Personally I still see only one scenario under which Favre comes back and that is if Rodgers get's injured at some point during the season.

Favre loves the game and like an ex-lover he has problems to let go I have little doubt about that. But unlike most ex-lovers I think Favre will get over it, take the high road and won't mess with the franchise he loves.

As a Vikings fan, I hope Favre comes back for another season. That way I can watch J. Allen crush him week 1, making him wish he would have stayed retired down in Hicksville USA.

July 3, 2008  01:51 PM ET

Allen may crush him, after the fact of him throwing a 70 yard bomb to Driver, Jennings or James Jones. Take your pick

Who is this Brett Favre guy I keep hearing about?

Hey BRETT, I've loved you for many years, but it sounds like you
need to see a SHRINK, not return to the Packers. Stay home and
enjoy the Packers on TV. Just QUIT already!

July 3, 2008  02:28 PM ET

Isn't a lot of this nonsense journalists who keep going back to him asking him these stupid questions? Leave Brett alone :P

Viking fans are the best. In their enitre franchise history they have done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, but they continue to trash talk. It's like clockwork, every year the vikings make some big splash in a trade or free agency and the player will somehow be the savior to come beat Favre and Packers, and yet every year the vikings always have one FATAL flaw in their team that buries them. This year looks to be no different.

I welcome back Brett with open arms. I will forever love to watch him crush the Vikqueens.

It's not something to be proud of but it is a testament to being good enough and healthy enough to play every week.

re: Montana
He took the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game. That isn't something a QB who is "finished" could do.

July 3, 2008  02:52 PM ET

I love Brett Favre!! I don't think the Green Bay Packers team will be the same without him. If the Packers turn him away they will loose a huge fan base. If you have ever came to south Mississippi, you know there are more packer fans here than probably any other team due to Brett Favre. I am a USM alumni and have watched Favre play through college at USM and pro. In Mississippi, he is a legacy. He should do what he thinks is best for him and his family.

July 3, 2008  03:00 PM ET

Favre should think about playing Centerfield for the Brewers. Can you imagine watching him field a blooper to center and then gunning down the hitter at first? Switching to baseball could easily add 10 years to his career and makes the Brewers the instant favorites in the NL.

July 3, 2008  03:19 PM ET

Larry Johnson, Tony Gonzalez, and Dwayne Bowe would LOVE to see #4 play for the Chiefs this year.
Imagine the opportunities for Bowe to get deep, and Gonzo down the seam if defenses continue to stack the LOS to stop Johnson.

And imagine how good Johnson can run if the safeties are back as they need to be to stop the Favre rockets downfield.

The Chiefs should cough up at least a #2 pick for Favre, because LJ is getting up there in mileage and Gonzalez is getting old too.

Great comeback. Don't forget to add All Time Touchdown Leader, Completions, Yards, etc.. When was the last time the Vikings won a Super Bowl??? Hmmmm, been quite some time. They had their shot with Culpepper/Moss, but those days are long gone.

I'm sure Rodgers will pick up right where Brett left off - crushing the Vikings playoff hopes in Game 1 of the 2008 season.

July 3, 2008  03:23 PM ET

Favre in the playoffs, at home?

-Lost to Michael Vick
-Lost to Daunte Culpepper
-Lost to Eli Manning

All as at least 7-point favorites, and Favre threw cruticial Ints in each of those games.
And don't forget the 6 Ints Favre threw in the playoff game at St Louis.

And don't forget the interception on the FIRST PLAY in overtime against the Eagles in the playoffs that killed that season.

Favre's had a great career....... in the regular season. He's no Montana though,
And no Brady, or Aikman, or Bradshaw, or even Staubach. Those guys earned multiple rings because they didn't throw the games away by throwing the killer Int in the playoffs.

July 3, 2008  03:25 PM ET

Aaron Rodgers is already better than any QB the Vikings have had since the one great year Culpepper had with Moss there.

Rodgers is already better than any QB the Bears have had in most of y'all's lifetimes.

Rodgers is already better than Alex Smith, who the Niners moronically chose ahead of him in the 2005 draft. That reminds me of the Chiefs taking Todd Blackledge before Dan Marino in 1983.

July 3, 2008  03:33 PM ET

Please don't say Favre is no "Brady." Brady couldn't shine Brett's shoes. Brady is a product of a corrupt organization and his accomplishments are void due to lack of true talent, grit and integrity.

Favre can do what he wants and will still be in the HOF as an all time great.
