Great article. The college football peeps will always say that their traditions are great, their half time bands are great, their fight songs are great, their fans make a lot of noise and have great parties where people get drunk. That has nothing to do with football. The game itself. College basketball has all that as well. Comparing just the sport, college football is sub par. The tackling is atrocious. Its laughable at times. Its a few good players and a crapload of terrible ones trying to chase them around. Did you watch Vince Young stroll into the endzone over and over? Wonder why he cant do that in the Pros.

I also think that college has completely sold out the sport. The entire concept of bowls instead of a playoff system is purely for money. Nothing the NFL could ever do would top this. Sure the NFL is about money but it doesn't do it at the expense of the game itself (nowhere near as much as this does anyway).

A playoff-type system that crowns a champ is something that is common to all sports around the world from soccer to sprinting to tennis. The concept is intrinsic to the very nature of competitive sports. This has been given up by colleges for the chance to make money in a silly bowl. The entire season is meaningless when you give up your chance to at least have a shot at being the underdog at the championship game ... for an opportunity to make money at some bowl. A lot of schools would have a chance if there was a playoff system (even a 6 team one). The very essence of the sport has been compromised when it is sold out like this.

It would be like Italy not playing in the world cup, or the Cavaliers not playing in the NBA playoffs, or Nadal not playing in the US open because they were offered money to play in an exhibition game by pringles potato chips. Cleveland would just agree to let favorites Boston and LA play in the "finals", take the money and run. As a sports fan I can never accept this concept and would say that the NBA is a farce. The decision not to have a playoff system is made by the schools themselves at the end of the day. Only they can change it. They will not do it simply because it brings in too much money.

One thing alone ends this arguement.... Pro players and coaches get...... PAID ANYWAYS! Have you ever seen the look of a Bama Senior... or heck.. even a 3rd-string Freshman.... when a rare loss to Auburn occurs??? They CRY! (and don't give me a "Its because they are.. blah blah blah crap.. Auburn does the same! ) Pro athletes... could care less if they lose a game... "Hey, I still got paid!" Pro sports are NOTHING more than SPECIALIZED PRODUCTION COMPANIES. Corporate America in providing entertainment in various activities.

Yeah... I don't think you really needed to squeeze that Bed Bath and Beyond reference in there Andy, I was just starting to respect your opinion a bit. That makes it tougher.

Anyway, you're right of course. I don't see why all these college football fanatic fans argue against it so vehemently. NCAAF is basically NFL's minor league.

Excellent post by EazyEMF.

It's pretty funny to hear college football fans arguing that the NFL has sold its soul to corporate sponsorship, yet their national title game in 2006 was called the Tostitos Bowl...lol

Not to mention the other comical, corporate, bowl game names that are out there: Capital One Bowl, Chick-fil-A Bowl, and one of my favorites, Outback Steakhouse Bowl. And let's face it, these other bowl games really don't matter. They're just glorified exhibition games.

The NFL is clearly the superior league where every team has an equal chance of winning the championship, unlike college where you have the same teams in contention year after year. And of course every week in the NFL counts (which makes it more exciting for a longer period of time), unlike college where one loss could potentially ruin your chances of making it to the big game.

Also, if the level of play in college is superior, why do some of the best college players turn out to be complete busts after they're drafted and why do college coaches go running back to the NCAA after failing miserably in the NFL?

Just to make something clear, I love college football. I'm also a big fan of minor league baseball. And the NBA D-League. But as great as college football is, it can't compete with the big boys of the NFL. So, with all due respect to my colleague Stewart Mandel and his argument that college is better than pro, here are 10 reasons the NFL rules:

1. NFL has better players: Why care more about smaller, slower, less skilled players?

2. NFL has a legitimate playoff system: Judges decide ice skating, not real sports. The BCS is an embarrassment.

3. Level playing field: NFL now has more parity than any pro league. I could tell you college's preseason top 10 for 2012 right now because it will be exactly the same as this year's. How many times do we have to see Texas beat up Rice or Notre Dame kill Navy? It's too hard to crack into the elite level of college football.

4. NFL is national, not regional: Every real sports fan knows the QB of every NFL team. Can you name the starter at Mississippi? Iowa State? Oregon? Syracuse? Baylor?

5. Super Sunday: A great excuse to eat chili and drink beer. College's national championship game used to be fun when it was on New Year's Day, but not on a random Wednesday in mid-January.

6. Passing: There's a reason they don't run the option in the NFL. Nothing is better than a Chargers-Dolphins 1981 AFC playoffs-type aerial show. And 98 percent of college teams can't deliver that.

7. The Draft: Not only can you imagine how your team is going to build a champion, you get to see college pretty boys like Brady Quinn sweat in the green room, which is almost as dramatic as an actual game.

8. Fantasy football: I used to believe any game without a ball wasn't a sport. Now, I think any sport that doesn't have fantasy doesn't count. Fantasy college football is in its infancy stages, while NFL is the king of the fantasy empire.

9. Da da da da: Monday Night Football is the one thing the founders of our nation truly got right. And it's safe to watch again now that Joe Theismann is gone.

10. Sundays need football more: On Saturdays, I like to go to Home Depot and Bed Bath and Beyond if there's time. I don't need football. Without the NFL on Sunday, I'd be on suicide watch one day a week.
