Like all great sports arguments, this debate began at a bar, with a number of SI.com colleagues earlier this week. The challenge: rank the 32 projected starting quarterbacks. The criteria: how will they perform in 2007, factoring intangibles such as winning and leadership along with statistics. Marc Bulger may have better numbers than Tom Brady, but that doesn't make Bulger more valuable.

After No. 5, this gets very difficult, but if you disagree with any of my rankings, I'll gladly set you straight in a FanNation Throwdown at any time.

  1. Peyton Manning
  2. Tom Brady
  3. Carson Palmer
  4. Drew Brees
  5. Philip Rivers
  6. Donovan McNabb
  7. Ben Roethlisberger
  8. Marc Bulger
  9. Matt Hasselbeck
  10. Michael Vick
  11. Tony Romo
  12. Matt Leinart
  13. Jay Cutler
  14. Vince Young
  15. Brett Favre
  16. Steve McNair
  17. Alex Smith
  18. Jeff Garcia
  19. Jake Delhomme
  20. Chad Pennington
  21. Jon Kitna
  22. Eli Manning
  23. Damon Huard
  24. Trent Green (assuming he's a Dolphin)
  25. Jason Campbell
  26. Rex Grossman
  27. Byron Leftwich
  28. J.P. Losman
  29. Matt Schaub
  30. Josh McCown
  31. Tarvaris Jackson
  32. Charlie Frye

Looks pretty good except I would NOT have Michael Vick anywhere near the top ten. His stats are average at best and he sure hasn't been able to take Atlanta to the promised land. Should be down around 20 with the other Manning, you know, the one that really stinks!

May 18, 2007  11:57 AM ET

yeah vick definately should have been much lower, even though I like the falcons...

May 18, 2007  12:02 PM ET

Vick should have been lower, i thnk eli mannig will have a good season n he should b in the top 15 and also brett favre is still the most dominating QB in the NFL he shuld be in the top 10

May 18, 2007  12:04 PM ET

Leinart, VIck, Romo, Bulger and cheeseburge rall ahead of Cutler with the weapons he has, you must be high! Throw River sin their too just for good measure...

May 18, 2007  12:05 PM ET

Agree that Vick should be lower than 10. McNabb at 6 seems a bit high too, considering his off-field mockings...

I also think McNair, who was solid last year, and Kitna (with maybe the best WR-duo this year) will shine more than 21st... Wasn't he 5th in passing yards last season?

But other than that i pretty much agree..

It seems a little premature to put Cutler, Leinart, and Romo so high on the list based upon only a few starts. Meanwhile, a proven QB with some flaws, but two straight playoff appearances, falls much lower (Eli Manning). Plus Rivers and Rothlisburger throw about 17 balls a game. Can they really qualify as top half QB's? If Tarvaris Jackson had a top 5 running game, he might be a top half QB too...

May 18, 2007  12:08 PM ET

He understandably has Tarvaris Jackson underrated. Daunte came out his second season and tore it up. I think T-Jack will lead this team to an 8-8 record. He's not going to be asked to win the games, just to develop.

I agree that Vick should be lower. His ranking is a product of years of media & NFL hype with little to back it up in the real world.

May 18, 2007  12:08 PM ET

Puttin Rivers ahead of Bulger? I'm not even a Rams fan and that is stupid.

May 18, 2007  12:09 PM ET

Ware you drunk when you wrote this ranking?

Vick
Romo
Smith
Cutler
Leinart

All better that Jake Delhomme or Chad Pennington. What have they done last season to even come close to being better that Delhomme or Pennington. I suggest you give back the salary SI is paying you because obviously you are robbing them and fooling the readers of this site.

How did you arrived at this.

May 18, 2007  12:09 PM ET

Pennington behind Romo, Cutler, Smith...? I don't know about that. He wins pretty well when healthy. Brady may - repeat may - be set up for a monster year, so 1 & 2 could easily flip.

May 18, 2007  12:09 PM ET

The list seems pretty good, but I definitely agree with the other two comments....based on the "leadership" and "stats, " how the heck can Vick be in the top 10......And seriously do you really think Romo showed anyone enough in the FEW games he played well in? I'm not a hater, but give him a season to be the "leader" of that team, then see where he falls or rises. Big Ben????? Top 10? I am not even going to touch that one.....even when he had a team around him, he was average at best!

May 18, 2007  12:10 PM ET

Brady should be #1. The guy has won 3 superbowls, and is always good for at least 3500 yards and 25 TD's a year. He is the most clutch QB in the NFL, maybe all time. The real question shouldn't be, is he the best in the NFL right now? It should be, is he the best of all time? Once he wins his 4th ring this year, he surpasses Montana. You know the saying, "the sun shines on a dogs **** every once in a while." Well, it shined on Manning's huge forehead this past season. It won't again. To even compare Manning to Brady is blasphemous, nevermind rank him ahead of Brady.

May 18, 2007  12:12 PM ET

I'd have Tarvaris Jackson in the top 20 based on the running game he has this year. Kitna above Eli? Calvin Johnson won't be that good yet. I think Leftwich is too low and Charlie Frye won't even be playing.

May 18, 2007  12:13 PM ET

I think that ranking Delhomme as high as he is ranked with the poor performance that he turned in last season is a little optimistic. Especially considering the weapons that he has to throw to and with two excellent (when healthy) running backs.

May 18, 2007  12:13 PM ET

ummm philip rivers and big ben ahead of marc bulger?? Wasn't Bulger the starter for the NFC pro bowl team last year? And haven't the rams done nothing but add to their already dynamic offense? Explain that one to me please

May 18, 2007  12:14 PM ET

come on... huard may not be the best qb in the league... but hes a little lower then he should be... but i guess he gets this season to prove himself...

May 18, 2007  12:15 PM ET

plus... will leftwich even start this year??? he might be replaced again if hes not careful!

May 18, 2007  12:15 PM ET

Maybe you didn't see Vince Young lead an awful team to the brink of the playoffs with miraculous clutch play, steady passing, and fearless leadership. To have the Rookie of the Year ranked behind two members of his draft class that didn't accomplish near what he did is just ridiculous.

Also, maybe you missed Michael Vick implode last season. Top 10? C'mon man.

May 18, 2007  12:17 PM ET

As a Pats fan I must say between Brady and Manning it should be 1A & 1B. Obviously Brady has been better team wise through his carreer, but Manning has to shoulder that team all season long. Like at the begining of last year he brought them out the darkness in 4 out of their eight first games. He plays well and they pass more so his yardage and stats will always be a little higher. He's also got two seasons on Brady. But Brady's big games, teams and titles will always over shadow him atleast till this point. Unless the Colts can win two or three more that is.

I agree, Vick sucks at QB. They should utilize him like a Ranel El, a WR/QB who could contribute in mutliple ways. Great athlete but not smart enough to run an offense.
