Last week, Notre Dame bit the bracket dust. This week, Georgetown and Kentucky almost did, too. Plus, we clearly have an injury situation that impacts the bracket. Here's what we know this week:
1) We're starting to see some separation for the one-seeds, although seven realistic candidates remain.
2) Saint Mary's is left out of the bracket this week because the Selection Committee will not assume Patty Mills will come back healthy.
3) Four at-large teams were dropped from this week's bracket, with Miami, San Diego State, Cincinnati and Arizona replacing UNLV, Baylor, Penn State and Saint Mary's.
4) There's still a significant dropoff at the 4-seed line, which has been hard to fill.
The champions from one-bid conferences have their league name in parentheses. Here's the multi-bid conference bid breakdown:
Big East: 9
ACC: 8
Pac-10: 6
Big Ten: 5
Big 12: 4
SEC: 5
MWC: 3
A-10: 2
No. 1 Seeds
Connecticut: Looked like the No. 1 overall seed against Louisville, not against Michigan.
Oklahoma: Road tests in the Big 12 will help decide whether Sooners stay.
Pittsburgh: Way too little hype for a title contender that was ranked No. 1.
North Carolina: Duke's profile might be better, but UNC is the better team.
No. 2 Seeds
Duke: Showed grit in rallying past Miami, but style questions are mounting.
Louisville: Why press a UConn team with multiple point guards and limited shooting?
Michigan State: Spartans win, then benefit from unexpected slides around them.
Marquette: They still did the "easy" part at 9-1. Let's see how the tough part goes.
No. 3 Seeds
Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons need to adjust now that teams have adjusted to them.
UCLA: Pounded Notre Dame, quietly establishing itself as a sleeper threat out West.
Clemson: Played 70 minutes of great basketball and 10 minutes of bad hoops.
Memphis (C-USA): Saturday night's ransacking of Gonzaga was really impressive.
No. 4 Seeds
Xavier: The A-10 is too deep to expect perfection, but losing at Duquesne was a surprise.
Butler (Horizon): Getting pushed by Wisconsin-Green Bay may help this team come March.
Kansas: So far, so good for the maturing Jayhawks. Next up … Missouri.
Missouri: The Tigers are no sleeper, so they make the hard-to-fill 4-line.
No. 5 Seeds
Florida State: Scored points by rallying from to beat a top-10 team on the road.
Washington: Bay Area split pushes Huskies behind UCLA in league and here.
Villanova: Maybe the biggest riser of the past two weeks keeps on rolling.
Illinois: The O remains spotty, but the D really clamped down on Purdue.
No. 6 Seeds
Syracuse: Can Eric Devendorf smell sixes as well as he can smell deuces?
Arizona State: Sun Devils bounce back up despite modest wins on Oregon trip.
Ohio State: Just behind Illinois for now, but you could argue both sides.
Florida: Best in the SEC? For now. Let's see what happens at Rupp.
No. 7 Seeds
Texas: Horns take a deserved drop after three straight losses.
Utah: The actual and the computer are starting to merge for the Utes.
West Virginia: Like Syracuse, has the chance to add some wins now.
Purdue: Getting Robbie Hummel back will be a big plus.
No. 8 Seeds
Gonzaga (WCC): Did not look ready to step up in class against Memphis.
Cal: Good bounceback sweep for the Golden Bears reverses their trend.
Utah State (WAC): Still perfect in the WAC and moving up in the bracket.
South Carolina: The Gamecocks just missed beating Florida for big sweep.
No. 9 Seeds
Tennessee: With others wobbling around them, losing at Auburn was a big miss.
Minnesota: Rough week for the Gophers in East Lansing and Columbus.
Dayton: Lost at Charlotte to miss chance to catch Xavier atop A-10.
LSU: Surging Tigers' schedule remains favorable for the time being.
No. 10 Seeds
Virginia Tech: In the midst of a real ACC soft spot and is taking advantage.
Davidson (SoCon): Late fade cost them C of C game, narrows margin for error.
USC: Need to prove more on the road to get much higher than this.
Boston College: Had Wake at the half but faded; profile still improving.
No. 11 Seeds
Miami (Fla.): Back in the bracket, but will 'Canes rue missed chance at Duke?
Siena (MAAC): Nipped by Rider, so now the pressure is on to keep winning.
Kentucky: The Wildcats need to beat Florida or could be out next week.
San Diego State: Surprise co-leader in the MWC gets a look as an at-large.
No. 12 Seeds
BYU: They won once, UNLV lost twice. So, Cougars stay here and Rebels drop out.
Cincinnati: Earned its way in with two wins over G'town and one over ND.
Georgetown: After getting swept by Cincy, omitting Hoyas was a real option.
Arizona: The Wildcats are the last team in this week after five straight Ws.
No. 13 Seeds
Buffalo (MAC): The MAC East is soooooo much better than the MAC West.
Northern Iowa (Missouri Valley): Still a two-game lead in the Valley despite loss.
Northeastern (CAA): Remains a game ahead of VCU and two up on Mason.
Western Kentucky (Sun Belt): The Toppers are still the Belt's top dogs.
No. 14 Seeds
North Dakota State (Summit): Clear class of the Summit League at this point.
Weber State (Big Sky): Wildcats have widened their lead to two in L column.
VMI (Big South): Holding off co-leader Radford, Liberty for another week.
E. Tenn. State (Atlantic Sun): Now has a one-game lead in the tightly packed A-Sun.
No. 15 Seeds
Texas A&M-CC (Southland): Islanders take over SFA's spot for this week.
Boston U. (America East): The Terriers now lead preseason favorite Vermont.
Morehead State (Ohio Valley): Tied with UT-Martin but beat the Skyhawks.
American (Patriot): Holy Cross holds tiebreaker, but American's the better team.
No. 16 Seeds
Robert Morris (Northeast): 11 straight league wins now for the Colonials.
Long Beach State (Big West): The 49ers still hold a slight lead in a wide-open race.
Morgan State (MEAC): Ivy's loss is the MEAC's gain. Morgan State makes main draw.
Alabama State (SWAC): Continues to hold a slim lead atop the competitive SWAC.
Princeton (Ivy): Shocking rout of Cornell gets 4-0 Tigers a date in the play-in game.
