The last time the Eagles got this type of win, scrunchies were cool and Reagan was in the White House.
Boston College broke a 24-year losing streak to Duke on Sunday with an 80-74 win (BOX | RECAP). Tyrese Rice, who spent the last 12 seconds of the game pumping up the home crowd, led his team with 22 points, including a three with less than two minutes remaining to put his team ahead. While Duke outrebounded the Eagles throughout the game, the Blue Devils were burned by some second and third putbacks from Boston College in the last few minutes of the game. (The Duke big men were plagued with foul trouble.) But will it be enough to get the Eagles into March Madness? "We're trying to prove to people that we belong at the Big Dance and the only way to do that is to keep getting wins," Rice told the sideline reporter as fans rushed the court behind him. With a favorable remaining schedule that includes the bottom four teams in the ACC, BC -- which currently boasts the 66th-ranked schedule nationally -- just has to sit and wait for a few bubble teams to fall.
Miami rising (even with a loss)
... But then again facing Miami might not be a piece of cake in the Eagles' next game. The Canes fought back from a double-digit deficit thanks to 35 points from Jack McClinton to come close to an upset win over the Tar Heels before falling 69-65 (BOX | RECAP). The Heels squashed the effort thanks to Ty Lawson, who Roy Williams described as "sick as a dog," hit a key shot to give the Heels a four-point lead with 10.6 seconds left. He added a free throw with 2.6 seconds left to ice the game, helping the Heels avoid another loss to the Canes and remain solidly in first place in the conference. The Heels are now two games ahead of second-place Duke and three in front of Clemson, which lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Virginia (BOX | RECAP).
