The Dodgers are looking for two things now: 1) a top-of-the-line starting pitcher; and 2) a reliever. The reliever will probably be easier, even in a weak relief market.

As for the starter, the Dodgers are looking into Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, two great pitchers who still may stay where they are.

The Dodgers were the biggest winner at last year's deadline when they added Casey Blake and a fellow named Manny Ramirez. But adding the starter will be anything but a snap.

One competing GM said the Dodgers have some good pitching prospects, but other than James McDonald, the others (who include Scott Elbert and Chris Withrow) might not be major-league ready. "They're not as ready as some others,'' one competing executive said.

A Dodgers person conceded that they might have to part with players currently on the big-league roster to get the prime-time starter they seek -- though it's difficult to imagine them giving up any of their best young players.
