The Red Sox's acquisition of Adam LaRoche hasn't put them completely out of the Victor Martinez derby -- though it would appear to lessen their need for a hitter. Word is that talks regarding Martinez have "cooled a bit,'' though they aren't believed to be totally dead.
The Indians have informed the Red Sox what it would take for Martinez, and Boston apparently prefers to wait and see if the price comes down. Cleveland seeks top young starting pitchers, and Boston has many excellent pitching prospects including Clay Buchholz, Daniel Bard, Junichi Tazawa, Casey Kelly and Michael Bowden. Bard is a top-of-the-line reliever, and some wonder whether Bowden will ultimately be a reliever.
In the meantime, LaRoche will enable Kevin Youkilis to move between first and third, and Mike Lowell, who had offseason hip surgery, will get some more rest.
