The Giants are back talking to the Pirates about 31-year-old second baseman Freddy Sanchez, a former batting champion.
The Giants need to upgrade their offense and appear to be focusing on Sanchez, who recently rejected an extension offer from Pittsburgh and is on the block.
The Pirates are looking for young players, and some names that could be in the mix include first baseman John Bowker, infielder Kevin Frandsen and Jesus Guzman. The Giants are well-stocked with prospects but wouldn't consider their top guys for Sanchez.
The Giants, who just acquired Ryan Garko on Monday from the Indians, tried for Nick Johnson but were told it would take Jonathan Sanchez in a package, and so they decided to go with Garko.
