Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik has informed teams that he "will listen'' now on lefthanded starting pitcher Jarrod Washburn, who's 8-6 with a 2.71 ERA.
The Yankees, who nearly traded for Washburn last summer, like the lefty. They also like the idea of acquiring a viable starting pitcher without having to give up Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes. Those young pitchers wouldn't be offered for Washburn, who is a "rental,'' as a free-agent-to-be.
Washburn probably moves to the top of the Yankees' wish list. But the Dodgers, Phillies, Angels and others are expected to consider Washburn as well.
