The Padres are telling teams they'll want to fill "multiple needs" if they deal closer Heath Bell. So he is available. But only barely.
Several teams have called about Bell (3-1, 2.06 ERA, 24 saves), including the Yankees, Marlins and Rockies. The Dodgers, Angels, Rangers, Twins and White Sox are other teams that may be looking for a reliever.
One competing exec was asked what the Padres' needs are, and he agreed they were multiple. He identified them as these: corner bat, starting pitcher, catcher and middle infielder.
And, of course, if they trade Bell, a closer.
Teams are still believing Adrian Gonzalez is even less available than Bell.
