The Mets determined on their organizational conference call Tuesday that they are buyers and could use a left-handed reliever. Among the names that fit them are the Nationals' Joe Beimel, the Pirates' John Grabow and the Blue Jays' Scott Downs. The Mets feel they need to give the well-used Pedro Feliciano a break, though they presumably do have Billy Wagner returning sometimes in August.
The main theme of the call, though was that the Mets will not mortgage their future. In other words, they will not trade Jenrry Mejia, Brad Holt, Ike Davis, Fernando Martinez or any of their other top prospects.
