The Red Sox and Padres are discussing a big package that includes Clay Buchholz, Justin Masterson and Jed Lowrie in exchange for San Diego's superstar first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. However, the sides are still pretty far apart, and Boston is still in the mix for Cleveland's Victor Martinez.
It has become clear Boston would prefer the heavier-hitting Gonzalez, but sources indicate the Padres are pressing for slugging prospect Lars Anderson and young outfield prospect Ryan Westmoreland. One Boston-connected person said he thought Westmoreland and pitching prospect Casey Kelly are two prospects that are near to untouchable.
Boston also has brought up Heath Bell's name in talks, which is interesting because it already has a stellar bullpen.
