<intro>
The Padres have traded Jake Peavy to the White Sox for four young pitchers, SI.com has learned.

San Diego gets Clayton Richard (LHP), Adam Russell (RHP), Aaron Poreda (LHP) and Dexter Carter (RHP).

Peavy, who has a full no-trade clause, rejected a similar trade to the White Sox back in May, but accepted a second time around. He is currently on the disabled list with a strained tendon in his right ankle.

Peavy is 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA this season. At age 28, Peavy is a two-time All-Star and won the National League Cy Young Award in 2007 with a 29-6 record and 2.54 ERA.
</intro>

My guess would be that he skipped a couple steps. What he probably meant was that if your team sucks on offense, than the good hitters are playing somewhere else, which means the only team that pads your ERA is the team you don't play. For instance, it's easy for the Red Sox and Yankees to have great pitchers, because they don't have to pitch against their own team. You think that C.C.'s ERA would be sparkling at 3.83 in the Wiffle Ball park known as Yankee Stadium if he didn't get to receive a pass on pitching against A-Rod, Tex, Matsui, Posada, Cano, Jeter, Damon, Swisher, and Melky? Yeah, I'm betting that if he was still in Cleveland that his ERA would be close to 4 or 4.50 right now. Just playing the Yankees twice would tack on .20-.30 and then factor in not having the benefit of facing a busted offense in the Indians during the first two months of the season. He went 12.2 IP and gave up only 4 ER against CLE. Imagine how many runs it would have been against NY during that time. Oakland and Baltimore both hun 6 on him 10 days before and 8 days after he gave up only 1 ER to Cleveland. Yeah, who's on your team makes a big difference in the stat column. You think it's a big surprise that the Dodger's middle of the road pitching is dominating with a team full of good hitters? If you take LA's staff and swap them with ANY team in the NL West's staff, I guarantee they go up .50 in team ERA. You have to factor in the games they don't play against the crap offenses of Arizona, San Diego, Colorado, or San Francisco, and add in the games they would have to play against the Dodgers legitimate offense.

You really want to stand behind that comment?

1) Thome, Konerko, and Dye have all had careers that could be rather suspect.

2) The Black Socks scandal? I believe those cheaters did lead the White Sox to the world series in a previous year!

3) Quite honestly, I hope the White Sox have a couple guys using banned PEDs because you guys could use it to try and catch the Tigers and the Twins.

The Dodgers are a very good baseball team no question. And Lincecum and Cain are very good pitchers no question. What I'm saying is the Dodgers record wouldn't be as good if they had to play an AL schedule, especially and AL East one. And Lincecum and Cain's ERA would be substantially higher in the American league, especially again, in the Al East. You can make book that Peavy's ERA with the White Sox will hover near 4.

        <quoted-text>i'm over all this nl west bashing. you know there is baseball outside of the midwest and the east coast right? dodgers have had the best record all year. can you name a 1-2 duo of starters better than the giants' lincecum and cain? and what about the rockies, if you've been following anything about baseball outside of your own hometown teams you'd know how formidable the nl west is this season.</quoted-text>

The point is Lincecum and Cain would not have the ERA's they do if they pitched in the American League. The Dodgers would not have the record they do if not for imbalanced schedules where they get to beat up NL West opponents for nearly half their games.

Peavy has been the best pitcher in that division, his lifetime era is 3.29. What do you think his ERA will be now that he is moving to the American League, I'll give you a hint, higher.
