The Blue Jays have traded third baseman Scott Rolen to the Reds, SI.com has learned.

Cincinnati dealt away 3B Edwin Encarnacion, RHP Josh Roenicke and minor league right-hander Zach Stewart.

Rolen agreed to waive his no-trade clause.

Rolen is batting .320 with eight homers and 43 RBIs. The Blue Jays included cash to pay part of Rolen's salary. Rolen has one more year left on an eight-year, $90 million deal he signed with the Cardinals. The 34-year-old Rolen is a five-time All-Star. He was the 1997 NL Rookie of the Year with Philadelphia and helped St. Louis win the 2006 World Series.

The 26-year-old Encarnacion led the Reds in errors last season with 23, and missed two months of this season with a chipped bone in his left wrist. He is batting .209 with five homers and 16 RBIs.

Roenicke didn't have a record in 11 appearances with the Reds. He had a 2.70 ERA in two stints with Cincinnati this season. Stewart was promoted to Triple-A Louisville during this season and had two saves in nine appearances.

In a separate deal, Cincinnati sent utilityman Jerry Hairston to the Yankees.

J. P. Ricciardi is useless.

You thought it wasn't prior to this??

July 31, 2009  03:51 PM ET

J.P. Ballard?

July 31, 2009  03:51 PM ET

Traded him for some left over Eric Davis jerseys.

July 31, 2009  03:53 PM ET

Can the Jays throw in Vernon Wells for no cost?

July 31, 2009  03:54 PM ET

What would the Jays be getting back?

July 31, 2009  03:55 PM ET

I hope they at least get a signed Pete Rose water bottle out of it!

July 31, 2009  03:57 PM ET

WTF? Probably getting Edwin Encarnacion and some low-end prospect.

You don't even know what the trade was for.

July 31, 2009  03:59 PM ET

Maybe they'll get Pete Rose himself. Isn't he being reinstated?

July 31, 2009  03:59 PM ET

I certainly hope we got rid of Edwin Encarnacion. Have fun with that, Toronto.

July 31, 2009  04:01 PM ET

I'm not too excited about the prospect of Edwin. He is a bum.

I don't need to. I am not basing my judgment of him on this one trade. I am basing it on years of ineptitude as well as this whole Roy Halladay fiasco.

2 coupons for dinner at Golden Coral and a used Homer Simpson t-shirt. Dooh!

July 31, 2009  04:07 PM ET

Well apparently the Jays are also getting top Reds prospect Yonder Alonso, a power-hitting 1B and 2008 first-round draft pick. This trade is officially awful for the Reds.

Fair enough, I'm not exactly a fan of JP. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here though. If we could get some decent prospects for aging player set to make $12 million next year I'm ok with that.

July 31, 2009  04:11 PM ET

Please include Edwin "E-5" Encarnacion in the trade! And J.P. though Adam Dunn was useless.

Yeah, those who are bashing the Jays are barking up the wrong tree. HUGE win for them. How you trade Alonso, I have no idea. An absolute steal.

Not sure if that's true by the way; I only heard it in one place. Just a rumor.
