Milwaukee acquired right-handed pitcher Claudio Vargas from the Dodgers, SI.com has learned.

The Dodgers received minor league catcher Vinny Rottino, according to MLB Network.

Vargas had made eight relief appearances for the Dodgers this season, posting a 1.64 ERA. He was on the DL for almost three months with elbow tendinitis before being activated on July 3.

Vargas played for Milwaukee in 2007, going 11-6 with a 6.06 ERA in 23 starts and six relief appearances.

The Tigers and Red Sox inquired about Mariners superstar pitcher Felix Hernandez. There isn't evidence he's very available, though, which is understandable.

The Tigers acquired left-hander Jarrod Washburn from Seattle instead. Before acquiring Washburn, the Tigers spoke of a big package that is believed to have included right-hander Edwin Jackson.

The Red Sox have a hand in every major name.

The Red Sox and Padres are discussing a big package that includes Clay Buchholz, Justin Masterson and Jed Lowrie in exchange for San Diego's superstar first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. However, the sides are still pretty far apart, and Boston is still in the mix for Cleveland's Victor Martinez.

It has become clear Boston would prefer the heavier-hitting Gonzalez, but sources indicate the Padres are pressing for slugging prospect Lars Anderson and young outfield prospect Ryan Westmoreland. One Boston-connected person said he thought Westmoreland and pitching prospect Casey Kelly are two prospects that are near to untouchable.

Boston also has brought up Heath Bell's name in talks, which is interesting because it already has a stellar bullpen.

The Yankees are pessimistic about doing anything major now after losing out to the Tigers for left-handed starter Jarrod Washburn, and will monitor the waiver wire to try to add someone after the waiver deadline.

Washburn had been hoping to go to the Yankees, but is OK with Detroit. The Yankees are seen as a team that may try to sign him in the winter, as are the Brewers. The Mariners love him, but the chances to re-sign him after trading him are unknown.
