Shaquille O'Neal, Richard Clement/Icon SMI

Shaquille O'Neal has spiced up the Oct. 29 season opener between his Suns and their bitter rivals, the Spurs. O'Neal said in a radio interview that he would "make the Spurs pay" for using the Hack-a-Shaq tactic during the first round of the playoffs last season. The Diesel made 32-of-64 (50 percent) from the free throw line in the Suns' five-game loss to Gregg Popovich's team. From the San Antonio Express-News:

O'Neal claims now he has no problem with the strategy itself. Just the timing of it.

"The only thing I call cowardly is when you're up by 10 and do it," Shaq told KTAR in Phoenix. "That's a coward move."

Of course, O'Neal isn't worried about more teams employing the strategy going forward.

"It doesn't work," O'Neal said, ignoring the fact that it kind of did. "You know San Antonio tried it but they went home a couple weeks after we went home."

...

"I just have to go to the line and hit them and make them pay," he said in the radio interview.

So it appears Shaq's plan for revenge involves morphing into Mark Price. Somehow we don't think Popovich is going to be losing much sleep at night.

it was about time that he makes someone pay for it

October 15, 2008  04:51 PM ET

how bout shaq finally earns his pay and makes some free-throws

October 15, 2008  04:51 PM ET

LOL, whatever Shaq.

October 15, 2008  04:52 PM ET

STFU U dumbass $#$&**^%^(. NO ONE will use the hack-a-shaq anymore 'coz they will NOT need to. You guys will be well out of the game by then!!! pathetic loser; How about practicing some free throws instead of mouthing off?
Shaq shud retire; he is an annoyance these days.

October 15, 2008  04:53 PM ET

Hes lucky to make it up and down the court how does one make another pay if you cannot catch them?

October 15, 2008  05:02 PM ET

MY 4YR OLD GRANDSON CAN MAKE TEN OUT OF TWENTY FREE THROWS,EVRY NBA PLAYER SHOULD AT LEAST MAKE 80 PERCIENT.

October 15, 2008  05:10 PM ET

If he shot 70 percent maybe, just maybe the hack-a-shaq would be moot.

October 15, 2008  05:12 PM ET

if he made all his free throws, he would have already been averaging over 10 pts a game in the playoffs just off his freethrows. its ridiculous that he cant find a way to get them in since he takes so many. he should underhand them in

October 15, 2008  05:13 PM ET

It's a simple rule that gets exploited by one the leagues dirtiest teams from top to bottom. Spurs have accomplished a lot, but they don't have the dynasty and fan hype behind them like the Early 2000's Lakers or other great NBA dynasties. Get got their rings, but nobody is a fan of what they do or how they play.

October 15, 2008  05:17 PM ET

You make that much money you would think he could hire someone to teach him to shoot better instead of spending all that time trying to rap. It is so sad that this guy dominated the NBA for so long and he really doesn't have much skill. His shooting is bad. He can't dribble and for having such big hands he doesn't receive passes well. He needs to thank god for his 385 lb 7-2 body with a little cordination.

October 15, 2008  05:17 PM ET

"It doesn't work," says shaq who then states that San Antonio went home AFTER his team. LOL Shaq you are so intelligent.

October 15, 2008  05:33 PM ET

Shaq has a lot of miles on him. You all forget he DOMINATED the game when he first arrived. Remember all those destroyed backboards that forced the NBA to have them changed so they wouldn't shatter with his dunks? He's done though. His size and past injuries are hampering him and he really can't hit his freethrows anyway. I think his trade to PHX was a marketing ploy to get the stands filled as well. I'm sure he'll be a free agent next season. Maybe San Antonio will pick him up <lol>

October 15, 2008  05:35 PM ET

I don't disagree that Shaq should have learned how to hit FT's many years ago. But, correct me if I'm wrong, the NBA needs to adjust it's officiating. The Hack-a-Shaq method requires the players to INTENTIONALLY foul Shaq. And to me, that calls for an INTENTIONAL foul to be called, thus giving Shaq a free-throw, and the Suns the ball back. Problem solved, teams won't "hack-a-Shaq" anymore.
At the end of the day, it's a coward's way to play an NBA game.

October 15, 2008  05:48 PM ET

It is NOT a cowardly way to play to force Shaq to make his free throws. The problem is, as nearly everyone here has said, that Shaq can't make a free throw. The fact that he has refused in 20 years of playing basketball to learn to shoot is his failure. He obviously will not listen to anyone on the topic, since his form is abysmal. He should retire, he is a distraction who it has been shown can be utterly neutralized on the court. If the league ever told the refs to call him for his constant foot shuffling he would never get another shot.

October 15, 2008  05:49 PM ET

Maybe if shaq didn't make a career off plowing straight through the other center or PF's to get points, then maybe he wouldn't get it how he lives.

Also how many years of basketball do you need to play before you learn how to SHOOT? This guy is a HOF calibur player that honestly has never learned how to shoot a basketball.

I only hope that he means "pay" as in "i finally learned how to shoot and I'll nail 85% of my free throws this year"

Shaq needs to **** and learn how to shoot.

October 15, 2008  05:51 PM ET

The SPURS are going to pay for Shaq missing free throws? Grow up.

"It doesn't work," O'Neal said, ignoring the fact that it kind of did. "You know San Antonio tried it but they went home a couple weeks after we went home."

So because it DID work, now it did not? Going home a couple weeks later than Shaq is still pretty good.

"I just have to go to the line and hit them and make them pay," he said in the radio interview.

Yes, we are all very worried that Shaq will make free throws. That is the whole essence of the Hack-a-Shaq strategy: that Shaq cannot make a high percentage of his free throws. If he could make free throws, then there would not be Hack-a-Shaq. He has his Hackin'-the-freethrows self to blame.

October 15, 2008  05:52 PM ET

"Hey Kobe, Tell me how my bricks look."

"I said Hey Kobe, Tell me how my bricks look"

And he sucks at rapping, and he's a pig. Shaq, do you eat bacon or ham?....Canibal.

October 15, 2008  05:54 PM ET

wait, is he even a cop anymore? i know he had is complimentary keystone badge stripped by whatever sleepy retirement town in AZ that he got it from.

Maybe you need to rewatch games of him early in this decade. It's not just his size, but the incredibly quick way he manuevers that massive body for position. It's true he can't shoot in the true form of the word (jump or set), but in his prime he had a ridiculous touch with the ball around the rim, not just dunking.

But yeah, not the point of the article. It is very pathetic that he can't hit 70% of his free throws and that goes for any NBA player. I made 65% in grade 8 being 5'6". Its really not very hard. He's crazy if he thinks he'll really improve.

Shaq will begin to make free-throws and make teams pay for using the hack-a-shaq method. This season the Suns will compete at a high level. Since the Shaq trade, Amare has been a better scorer. Nash will get easier assist giving the ball to Shaq. My predicition will be that the Suns will meet up with the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. Where I'm sure things will go to seven exciting games.
