WASHINGTON -- Xavier's 85-78 win over Purdue here Saturday was presumably frustrating for Boilermakers fans to watch, but no one more so than the brown-and-gold clad woman in the first row of stands behind me who spent nearly the entire second half berating the officials, her voice loud enough to be heard across the Virginia border.
Among the highlights (picture all the words below being screamed at you):
"You guys are terrible! All three of you. You've only blown your whistle once the whole game."
"Blow your g-damn whistle!"
"You have no friggin' clue what you're doing."
The refs may actually have been flustered. There were several delays over the final couple of minutes where the officials couldn't figure out which subs were or were not supposed to be on the court. At one point, Xavier coach Sean Miller shouted, "What the heck is going on?"
Ms. Purdue's critique, combined with the many articles following Xavier's first-round win over Georgia questioning the large discrepancy in free-throws between the two teams (33-5), and one can come away with only one reasonable conclusion: There was obviously a massive NCAA conspiracy to get the Musketeers to the Sweet 16.
