Or shall I call it Belk Arena East? As Davidson and Gonzaga run up and down the court here in Raleigh, there’s no doubt that this is a pro-Wildcats crowd. The red-clad fans of Davidson, located just 160 miles from Raleigh, make up maybe 20 percent of the fans in the RBC Center, which seats more than 19,000. But the Wildcats are also drawing support from the fans of fellow instate school, North Carolina, who have made their way into the arena even though their game is not scheduled to begin until 7:10 pm. (Expect the arena to become Smith Center South come tonight’s session.)

Update: Davidson guard Stephen Curry just hit a three from the left wing to cut the Wildcats’ deficit to 58-54, and all but the Gonzaga section went nuts, even the Maryland-Baltimore County fans. How do you explain that?

Curry has just hit another three from the top of the key to tie the game at 62, drawing the biggest crowd eruption of the day. This last nine minutes will definitely feel like a road game for the Zags now.

An aside from press row: I’m sitting next to longtime Georgetown and Washington Redskins play-by-play announcer Rich Chvotkin. If you’ve ever listened to a Hoyas or Redskins game, you know what a great voice he has. But what a friendly guy as well. He’s calling the play-by-play of the Gonzaga-Davidson game to himself even though he’s not on the air.
