SI.com's Peter King just phoned in with a report on Saints running back Reggie Bush. From King:

What the New Orleans Saints feared Sunday night became reality Monday morning: All-purpose running back Reggie Bush, who leads the NFL with eight TDs, has a torn meniscus in his left knee and will undergo arthriscopic surgery today to repair the knee.

Bush is expected to miss three or four weeks, beginning with this week's game in London against San Diego. The Saints then have a bye, and follow that with games at Atlanta and Kansas City. He is expected to return Nov. 16 against the Chiefs or Nov. 24 against the Packers.

Bush sustained the injury just before halftime of the Saints' loss at Carolina on Sunday. He said he felt something pop in his knee while trying to evade a Carolina tackler. The Saints advised him to see renowned doctor James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., this morning. It is Andrews who made the diagnosis on Bush.

In Bush's absence the Saints are expected to turn to backups Aaron Stecker and Pierre Thomas to take his place. New Orleans also will have a healthier Jeremy Shockey and Marques Colston back in the lineup. Both returned Sunday but weren't 100 percent because of lingering injuries.

This further underscores Peter's contention from this morning's MMQB article that a longer season will just lead to more marquee names on the IR or PUP list.

Am I the only Saints fan who watch their game against the 49ers when Deuce McAllister was the featured RB as the Saints earned a "W"? ...... I'm not sure why Deuce McAllister wouldn't regain his status as the starting running back with Reggie out for a few weeks.

October 20, 2008  12:44 PM ET

Deuce is about to be set loose.

October 20, 2008  02:34 PM ET

Deuce will be a starter and get the majority of the carries, they just mean Stecker and/or Thomas will pick up some of Bush's receiving and change-of-pace rushing duties.

From the fantasy perspective, It will undoubtedly turn into the dreaded RB by-committe situations.

Did anyone else notice the hypocrisy in King's article today - smothering some love on Hines Ward's vicious "but legal" hit on Keith Rivers that broke his jaw, saying that "Ward went all out, and when you do that in this game, sometimes people get hurt", right after ranting about how more games will lead to more chances for big-name injuries?

October 20, 2008  05:11 PM ET

Still unsure why McAllister wasn't the starting back.

Whats hypocritical about that? The Ward hit was a good hit, but unfortunately a guy got hurt. If two more weeks are added to the season there will be two more weeks of hits like that, thus more injuries. It just reinforced his point.

Here Here
King makes a fool out of himsefl regularly, he is also way to goody2-shoes about things outside of football.
He thinks we care about his kids, ah wake up Peter we read you for football news. Your personal life is not something anybody cares about.

Pretty simple: they're both unnecessary to the game at large. He applauds the one that directly leads to serious injuries in players... and uses the topic as a reason to argue against the other, which indirectly leads to these injuries at best.

As for two more weeks of hits like that? It'd come with two -less- preseason games where players often get hurt... without the games that the injuries come in even having meaning. Using that claim as a reference on this topic is flimsy at best.

(I will not attack Mr. King on his non-football comments in his articles; I do not want to link myself to such comments. I just found this one particular pair of comments to be very hypocritical.)

I'm telling you put less padding on these brutes and they won't go whacking each other like they're immortals anymore... simple

Yeah, if the season was only 5 games, this never would have happened. But as I recall, Brady went down in week one.

How ignorant are you people. Its one thing to protect a quarterback with fines, etc, but Rivers is a freakin linebacker taking a LEGAL block from a wideout. Basically, you guys think that the NFL should be a touch football league, so that no one ever gets hurt. What King was saying was that he appreciates tough play like this and wants it to continue, but knows that this will be impossible in an 18 game season where bringing that level of intensity can lead to 2 games worth of extra injuries.
Additionally, calling him out for the personal tidbits which make MMQB the best article of the week is a low blow and further reveals your ignorance. Go watch a 10 year old flag football game... maybe you'll appreciate it more.
