Kurt Warner took the Arizona Cardinals to their first Super Bowl. Now the quarterback wants to take the team to the bank. From ESPN.com:

Arizona and Warner have not agreed to a contract extension, but the Cardinals have crossed an important barrier. Arizona is now offering more than $10 million a year to keep him, according to a source.

Warner, whose accurate arm and flair for the passing game helped carry the Cardinals to their first Super Bowl appearance, is hoping to land a contract offer that would reflect that he is a top five quarterback. Top five quarterbacks make between $14 million and $16 million a year. The Cardinals, according to a source, are believed to be offering between $10 million and $12 million a year.

If Warner doesnt take it he wont find what he is asking anywhere else...I cant see paying him top 5 for one decent year out of the last 5 of his career. Plus he isnt getting any younger, he should take the offer and run.

February 23, 2009  12:03 PM ET

He'll take it. No way he wants to leave AZ and those receivers, especially to go to a cold-weather place like Chicago, who has reportedly had some interest.

February 23, 2009  12:24 PM ET

message to Kurt: Take the money and go break some more records throwing to the best reciever in the game...Also, quit wearing those gloves, you are in Arizona, it's HOT!!!!

February 23, 2009  12:39 PM ET

Well....He struggles mostly against hard hitting defense.... go figure.

February 23, 2009  12:41 PM ET

I'm glad AZ has offered Kurt the contract. Kurt is a really good QB IN THE RIGHT SYSTEM and the Cardinals are the perfect place for him. If they get a REALLY good RB and some help defensively they will be back in the SB soon. Wisenhunt is a smart Coach and will work to Kurt's strengths. I see the Cards being a good team for a while with Warner back in the pocket.

February 23, 2009  12:42 PM ET

Again... is SB, he forced two throws into tight coverage - one was a touchdown...and other intercepted for a TD. Cards should have gone to half time with a field goal.

Most elite QBs won't force a such throws into tight coverage...well again he might thought his elite receivers would have bailed him out.

February 23, 2009  12:54 PM ET

Rohn,
MOST "elite QB's" didn't even TAKE their teams to the SB. Guys like Warner, Rivers, Brees and Romo always make the game VERY exciting to watch...but at the same time have that tendency to break your heart a couple times a season.
Warner got his team back in the lead...the "D" broke Card fans hearts this time...and "no" I'm not a Cardinal fan.
;-)

what a stupid comment..

He may be looking for 14-16 million a year. Ultimately I think he will except 12.

February 23, 2009  01:03 PM ET

He did that couple of times playing in the weakest league and with mostly even regular season win-loss....Agreed he plays much better than most QB is playoffs...

What I was hinting that he should be much better game manager rather than throwing hail marys... if he hadn't that interception that time, Cards would have won easily even without Cards D failing... Remember Cards were playing against a Superbowl won team in Steelers.. what they were expecting? Miracles from Cards D? Warner should have managed it much better playing in this league this long....

Do you honestly think Cards will do this this year?

I couldn't agree more. Rohn is an idiot.

All tougher teams basically beat Cards handily last year...

The offer is smart, and Warner is a good QB. Still, that mistake in the SB was a huge mistake. I'm not sure you can say it cost his team the game because it was really decided in the second half, but it was a disaster of a play for sure.

Warner played fantastic in the playoffs, but the Cardinals all year in terms of wins and losses went as their defense went. The defense played out of its mind in the NFC playoffs and that is the primary reason they got through. It was mostly the same through the regular season as well. The reason the Cards got super hot during the playoffs was mostly their D. KW was good all season including the postseason, but the defense and Fitz deserve the most credit IMO in terms of getting them to the SB.

KW's fumble problem is substantial as well. Guys like P Manning lose 2-3 fumbles a year, whereas KW loses probably 8-10 a year. That's a huge difference.

He had 7 fumbles lost 2 years ago, other than that he's never had another year where he's lost more than 3. Manning had a year where he lost 4 and another year where he lost 5. When you feel the need to say probably when making an accusation of incompetence against someone perhaps you should feel the need to do some research. Oh by the way, if you are a big Manning fan, Peyton has also been the author of two seasons in which he threw more than Kurt Warner's single season high of 22 interceptions.

I think Warner is a great qb, but as someone else commented, he's probably only got a year or maybe two left. Also, remember the league they were in...how many other teams have clinched with a crappy 9-7 record, then lost the last 2 games before the playoffs? I'm a Fins fan and they were in a 3 way tie with the Jets and Patriots with 11-5, and then after getting comeback guy of the year they don't put my qb in the ProBowl and go with Favre who can't even play...I question some of THAT decision making process. Warner, take the deal, have a great end of career and go out with dignity (unlike a previously mentioned qb...).

Yeah, its had to gauge his year in that division. They played so poorly after clinching so early. But how much of that is let down from a perennial loser finally clinching the playoffs and how much was just them not having the talent? The other teams in the division should all get better this year, but I still think the Cardinals will be in the playoffs.
