<body>My take on the Bellicheck for coach of the year issue is this: He was not taping to help his team in that game. He was taping to help his team in future games against the same coaches. He has probably been taping forever. I'd be willing to bet that he was spending a great deal of time creating a file on each coach that he has faced with notes about what certain signals might mean. I would be willing to bet that while it would not have amounted to knowing what the opposing team is calling every play, that in certain situations it was valuable. Perhaps even game-changing. What surprises me is that I haven't seen many stories to that effect from sportswriters. Everyone seems to suggest that one game at the beginning of the season isn't a big deal. But this is not Bill's first year coaching and the intelligence that he has gathered legally and illegally over time could be invaluable to him at times.

I'm sure I wouldn't go so far as to suggest that the Patriots would suck if he wasn't taping all the time in the past, but I don't think the effects of the taping are immediately erased because he was caught and punished. I think his team is a great team taking every advantage they can and I also think they know that they have to put on one hell of a show to hope to erase the asterisk from their previous years that may exist in people's minds right now. And it's working. I just don't see how anyone can vote for him for coach of the year this year without knowing a lot more about what he was doing with the information that he collected over the years and what advantages it provided him and his team.</body>

<body>I attempted to start a throwdown with you about leaving Derrick Brooks off your list here, http://www.fannation.com/throwdowns/show/88959, but it was deleted because rather than being a man and defending your opinion, you ran away and hid like a little girl.

On some level, you obviously realize that leaving Brooks off the list was idiotic. Rather than simply admitting it, you'd rather blather on about some coffee you drank or one of your daughter's sporting events. I think it's absurd that a professional sportswriter lacks the ability to simply admit he's wrong. Pretty sad.

I'm here. I'm not going away. And I'm calling you out. Either admit you were wrong or accept my Throwdown Challenge. But quit being a coward.

Here's the invitation: http://www.fannation.com/throwdowns/show/90142

        <body>Peter-

I pointed out after you published your Top 500 players in the NFL list that you had left off future Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks. In response, you basically asserted that he was washed up and not deserving of inclusion.

With Derrick Brooks getting Pro Bowl consideration (http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/story/10528179/rss) and tied for 12th in the league for tackles with Brian Urlacher, I'm just wondering if you're ready to admit you were wrong to leave him off the List. You even included Chris Simms for god's sake, but left off Brooks, one of the greatest players of his generation.

As I imagine most teams could use a ProBowl level linebacker, and a guy who brings the character and leadership to the table that Brooks does, I think it's time you stepped up and admitted you were wrong.

        <body>Pete,

Now they are coming out and saying the Jets spied on the Patriots first, kinda the pot calling the kettle black, as I'm sure Mangini learned everything he knew from Belichick.
Mangini knew all along it was the NY Jets chance to stick it to BB and the Pats, and they took it. The Jets nabbed the camera guy, then blabbed it to everyone they could, and then informed NFL security... by the time ESPN had gotten done hyping it up for a few days the NFL had no choice but to slam the Pats.
Mangini knew this, and it was a bold and brilliant move to try and criple his former boss and Division rival. When is someone going to come forth and just state this truth?</body>

<body>1. Teams draft players by positions needed and what players available. Yes, the Texans passed over Young and Bush and selected Williams. But trying to compare a QB, RB and a DE is like comparing apples and oranges. Their stats are not the same. They should be judge by how they performed as a team player since football is all about team work. Plus, I haven't seen the Texans in a playoff since the Williams pick.

2. Vick could return to as a QB in 2010. (a) He would have served his debt to society. (b) If the NFL commissioner reinstates him. (c) There is a team that is willing to accept him and he makes the team. (d) Will Vick still have the heart and soul to play.

3. I more worried about Norv than Rivers.

4. Whatever happen to Romeo as Coach of the Year?

5. Poor Cam should be fired along with the GM. There were too much bad decision in the past and Cam's picks in the draft left me scratching my head.

<body>Hey Pete, just read about the jets video taping the Pats sideline last year.
Am I wrong or was it against the rules to do that last year too? Wow I guess you were right all along, there is more to this story! But then again , since there is no accountability (cajones) in &amp;quot;jounalism&amp;quot; these days I'm sure you won't report on it. Maybe if you ask real nice you could get one of those &amp;quot;humble pie &amp;quot; T-shirts from BB.</body>

        <body>Two things:
A) Why is Bryant Gumbel still allowed to do NFL games on the NFL Network? He is TERRIBLE!!!
B) Vick is a murderer. Plain a simple. 23 months is not long enough. He deserves way worse. When are we as a species going to learn we are not superior to anything else? Put it this way, if Vick had done the same acts to babies and/or children, what would his punishment be? Animals should be viewed as such. It disgusts me people don't care. I wish only the worst and most horrible thing to Vick.</body>

        <body>Peter,

I understand what you're saying about being able to get good running backs late in the draft or even undrafted (a la Willie Parker). But seriously, how can you justify advising teams to steer clear of RBs at the top of round 1? Accoridng to you the teams at the top of round 1 next year should not draft Darren McFadden (assuming he turns pro) and can pick up a quality back on day 2. Okay, so WHICH back do they pick on day 2? You don't know, do you? Neither do the teams. Sure, some team will get lucky and the guy they pick on day will turn out to be productive, but it's a lottery. If you have a major need at RB and you want to get yourself a productive runner, your best chance at doing so is by drafting one at the top of the first round (as long as you don't reach).

What is the success rate of top 10 RBs? I haven't done any research, but I'd guess 50% of them have tunred out to be good backs (or better). I think you'll find that is a much higher percentage than for the backs taken in the later rounds.

My point is every team will occasionally draft a great player on day 2 - the trouble is you have no control over which player or what position that will be. If you have a specific need the best way to address is always has been (and always will be) to draft a suitable player in the top if you are lucky enough to have a top 10 pick and the player is a &amp;quot;top 10&amp;quot; talent.

Enjoy your columns...</body>
