Being a fan of the "2nd team" in the "2nd City," where our team gets no respect even after winning the '05 World Series, I will be rooting against the Cubs. Their fans gave no congrats, no "good job" and ultimately made excuses as to why we won. Not to mention, rooted for a team in their own division! I'm sick of hearing them whine about how it's been 100 years and they deserve it. That's a bunch of crap. No one deserves anything. You need to work hard to win. Nothing in baseball is just given. Punching gatorade jugs(Zambrano) and your own teammates(Zambrano again and Barrett)will get you no where.

All I have to say is if the Cubs do make the playoffs and then to the World Series, this is one Sox fan who will not "jump on the bandwagon."

I think that it would be great for baseball to have the Cubs win the World Series after 100 years. I don't live in or near Chicago, but have been able to watch the Cubs on tv since I was a kid (thanks, WGN). I was also in Milwaukee this season to watch some games and can say that they are a first class organization. Everyone was very nice, and we had a great time.
I agree^^^that sports are just entertainment and if you actually hate other teams, then there is definatley something missing in your life. Relax, drink a beer, and enjoy the game.

Thats a terrific post. The anonymity of the internet just gives people a shield to say some truly awful stuff. Sports are meant to entertain and a friendly rivalry with some good natured arguments/ribbing is totally acceptable. But c'mon, there is nothing wrong with Chicago, just like there is nothing wrong with Wisconsin. Relax and enjoy both teams(whoever you root for) because they are both playing really great baseball.

And speaking of the darker side of human nature, I just have to add this: I know sports fans can be a passionate and loony bunch, but if your "hatred" of another team treads into the territory of denigrating an entire city and its inhabitants, it's time to do a little reality check. Sports teams pay players millions of dollars to entertain. In the grand scheme of things, that's a pretty minor contribution to society and hardly something that warrants fanning the flames of hatred. Makes me wonder if you think jack-booted storm troopers and ethnic cleansing are good ideas.

Not a bad first article by Joe, but it was more of and infield single than a home run. The Cubs hardly qualify as "villians" by virtue of their sad history when it comes to the post-season. They will be the underdogs in the post-season regardless of who they play and I have no doubt support will fall on the Cubs' side of the fence if they make it to the series. The "curse" drama will be there, the 100 years of anticipation will be there and I have no doubt most sports fans will want to share in the exhiliration and cathartic release of emotion that will come when the last out is made, and the Cubs win the series. It will be one of the most memorable and historic moment s in sports in our lifetime. Human nature will ensure there will be more people smiling and jumping up and down instead of crying and pouting.

Guarantee it - When the Cubs DO finally win the World Series, be it this year or one of the next few, it will be a sports story like NONE has ever come before it........so talk about your curses and your bartman and your chokes....and we'll sit back with our best record in baseball and watch the brewers choke, kind of like they did tonight (not to mention the end of last year)......

I'm a fan of an AL team with virtually no connection to the the Cubs. I don't follow them to a tee and I don't really hate them but I don't like them either. And if the Cubs win, what "curse" do we have left. The Rocky curse isn't really that interesting even to Tribe fans.

I use to cheer on the Cubbies (as well as Boston) but 2004 changed that. Boston fans became worse than Yankee fans in some cases (even though I have ran into only 1 Boston fan that knows you score runs and not points opposed to no educated Yankee fans). I think Cub fans will be just as cocky as Boston fans typically are considering they are a bit more in your face about it than Boston fans. At least I admit it. I don't hate them since I would much rather spend my hatred on other teams. But I won't be cheering for them either.

gotta say I agree with MinFan on this one. My hatred runs deeper for the arrogance of their fan base more than the team. Though I do admit to a severe loathing of Zambrano. If Zambrano was out of the picture, hatred wouldn't be an adjective I'd use anymore. But these people just go on and on about how great their defective team is. And when the choke happens, it's blamed on the curse or some other BS. Whatever... I don't need to root against the cubs or their fans despite rootin for my crew. The upcoming choke will balance out the karma and all is well the next day. What the cubby fans don't understand when their pumpin their fists in the air and shoving their BS down your throat is the degree of pleasure that the fans of their competition enjoy when that godsent choke happens. "no soup for you!"

"It just amazes me that living in Chicago you would never know there is another baseball team in the same city in 1st place."

Try being a Twins fan watching ESPN, FOX, or TBS. Apparently, if a team doesn't play on the east or west coast or in Chicago, it doesn't exist. The national sports media is a joke. The MLB post season is already rigged so that several teams from those locations make it to October. It's almost pathetic listening to announcers for these networks rooting for the Yankees, Sox, Mets, Phillies, ect, ect, ect.

Illinois is the armpit of America, and Wrigley Field is a hairy mole in that armpit. It's really hard to hate a team that has never and will never win anything, but congratulations Cubbies, we hate you. If the Cubs played in a city outside of Illinois, these feelings would not be nearly as strong, even as a Brewers rival. The Bears are a joke, good luck with Orton. Champagne is a sad excuse for a Big Ten town. The geography of the state is mind-numbingly boring like no other place on Earth. The worst part about living in Wisconsin is that we have to drive through Illinois to get to most of the rest of the country. Cubs will choke, and their fans will find some excuse to blame it on, like a Billy Goat, or a Bartmann, or who knows what. Go Brewers, Packers, and Badgers!

SI.com's newest columnist, Joe Posnanski, debuts today with a piece on how the Cubs are not the lovable franchise they're often made out to be. In fact, a lot of folks in the Midwest hate the Cubbies. With the Yankees and Red Sox in danger of missing the playoffs, that would leave the Cubs along on baseball's biggest stage as the team fans most love to hate.

So tell us...do you hate the Cubs? Will you be rooting against them this October? Does baseball need teams that the average fan can root against every fall?
