Who is the most overrated player in baseball ?

Derek Jeter, Yankees SS.....10%
Barry Zito, Giants P.....9%
J.D. Drew, Red Sox OF.....7%
Alex Rodriguez, Yankees 3B.....7%
Kevin Youkilis, Red Sox 1B.....4%
David Wright, Mets 3B......4%
Mark Prior, Padres SP.....3%
Andruw Jones, Dodgers CF.....3%
Curt Schilling, Red Sox SP.....3%
Juan Pierre, Dodgers CF.....2%

[Based on a survey of 495 MLB players]

FAST FACTS: Players couldn't vote for a teammate.... Jeter was second, Rodriguez first, in last week's poll, "Whom would you pick to build a team around?".... Nine of the top 16 vote-getters play for the Red Sox or the Yankees including Boston's Curt Schilling (9th, 3%) and Daisuke Matsuzaka (15th, 1.6%), and New York's Johnny Damon (11th, 2.2%), Carl Pavano (14th, 1.7%) and Jason Giambi (16th, 1.5%).

This is an expanded MLB poll from the June 23, 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated.

What's your take on this poll?

MORE REASON TO HATE DEREK F*CKING JETER. HE IS OBVIOUSLY OVERRATED, AS HE IS REALLY JUST A SINGLES HITTER. I GUARANTEE YOU, 100%, THAT IF HE WAS PLAYING FOR, SAY, THE TWINS, KNOW ONE WOULD HAVE EVER HEARD OF HIM. REPEAT AFTER ME: THERE IS NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT AN AVERAGE FIELDING, .300 HITTING, 20 HR AND 90 RBI PLAYER. HE IS NOT A HALL-OF-FAMER, ALL-STAR, OR EVEN A GOOD PLAYER. THANK GOD THE PLAYER IN MLB HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT.

normally i'm the one defending these polls, saying that the players know each other far better than the fans and reporters do. but this one seems fishy. consider this:

9 of top 16 vote getters are red sox or yanks.

8 of last 12 AL pennants were won by red sox or yanks.

something ain't right. i suspect jealousy is playing a role in this poll.

as a fan of a small market team (twins) i have no love for either of the evil empires. but i watched those world series.....curt schilling is one of the great clutch pitchers of my lifetime. youk, the guy has great at-bat after great at-bat. jeter? come on, talk about a guy whose contributions go beyond the box score.

i'd be willing to discuss a-rod. not that he isnt a great player, but i have questions about whether he is really a guy you want to build a team around.

some guys that i was expecting to see on this list....
miguel tejada
alfonso soriano
joe mauer (really. and i'm from minnesota. i liken him to ken oberkfell, who had the nickname 5-0-2-0 (five at bats, no runs, two hits, no rbi)

anyway, thats my take on all this.

re: barry zito....i don't understand how you can be over rated when everyone agrees you're no good.

FIRST, CARMONAFAN YOU ARE A PINHEAD. SECOND, CARL PAVANO, JOHNNY DAMON, AND JASON GIAMBI TO BUILD A TEAM AROUND. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? THIS POLL IS A JOKE. ALSO THEY PICK JETER AS THE MOST OVERRATED PLAYER IN BASEBALL, THEN PICK HIM AS THE SECOND MOST POPULAR PLAYER TO BUILD A TEAM AROUND. WOW. CARMONAFAN DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BASEBALL? JETER IS 7 TIME ALLSTAR, HAS WON 3 GOLD GOLVES, HAS BEEN ALL STAR GAME MVP AND WORLD SERIES MVP, ALREADY HAS 2,000 HITS, IS A 4 TIME WORLD CHAMPION (HOW MANY HAS FAUSTO CARMONA WON?), WAS AL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, HAS THE MOST POSTSEASON HITS EVER IN THE MLB, ALSO SET A RECORD OF HITS BY A ROOKIE IN THE POSTSEASON 22, AND YOUR SAYING HES NOT GOOD AND ISNT A FUTURE HALL OF FAMER. BUT I GUESS FAUSTO CARMONA IS A FUTURE HALL OF FAMER RIGHT?

How is JD Drew the 3rd most overrated player in baseball?? Thru June 19th he is hitting .327 with 13 HR and 43 RBI. David Ortiz has 13 HR and 43 RBI as well. And in June he has been wild. Also thru June 19th he was hitting .441 wiht 9 HR and 21 RBI not to mention a 1.085 slugging percentage. Also Mark Prior should be first on the list! He is a BUM. He has been hurt his whole career yet still gets paid and it is a tragedy when he gets hurt.. AGAIN. currently he is on the DL wiht the Padres. And as i do hate A-ROd the man iwns MVP after MVP last year he was an animal. He's just overrated 'cus evryone hates him. I also want to know how Kevin Youklis is overrated. He had a crazy long streak for errorless games. He consistently hits for a good BA annnnnd is so draws a lot of wlaks. His OBP is always wild.

June 20, 2008  06:40 PM ET

where is adam dunn? i like him a lot because he's a beast but his batting average(BA) is consistently brutal and he strikeouts as much as anyone in the majors. I understand though because he hits a lot of home runs and manufactures runs like a mad man.
I also would like to say that Adrian Gonzalez - 1B of the padres is the most UNDERRATED player in the MLB. The man smashes home run after homerun and has a lot of RBI. Looking at his numbers he is a household name but he isn't even Top 5 for all star voting of NL first basemen because he plays in San Diego and the NL West. There is NO ONE as underrated as Adrian Gonzalez. If he played for the Cubs or Yankees or red sox or dodgers he would be a household name.

Rediculous----this is complete disrespect for the game of baseball. Here is your proof why Jeter is not only not overrated but one of the 5 greatest shortstops ever! Players in the MLB need to wake up and pattern themselves after Jeter and not knock his first ballot hall of fame career.

Career stats of 5 hall of fame shortstops. 162 game averages for their entire career.

Cal Ripkin Jr. .276 avg. 23 hr's 91rbi's 172hits
Phil Rizzuto .273 avg. 4 hr's 50 rbi's 155 hits
Honus Wagner .327 avg. 6 hr's 100 rbi's 198 hits
Robin Yount .285 avg. 14 hr's 80 rbi's 178 hits
Ozzie Smith .262 avg. 2 hr's 50 rbi's 155 hits
DEREK JETER .316 avg 17 hr's 82 rbi's 207 hits

No wonder he completely disreguarded the reporters when asked about the overrated player news. Come on get real. Every envious player on losing teams need to wake up and maybe become a captain, a team leader, and a more complete player. Maybe some day they can also become the all-time post season hits leader too.
