<body>People, I know I am a red sox fan, so get that out of the way, but Jeter is very very good, likely a first ballot HOFer. His defense is SOLID but people need to stop pointing out his gold gloves. It has been proven over and over again his range is nothing spectacular. Gold gloves dont really mean anything anyway, theyre just votes from the media (who will never give the award to a, say, Jason Bartlett or someone). He isnt by any means bad at defense, but I watch him everyday on YES here in CT and theres lots of balls hit by him. He never makes an error on a throw or anything.

Hitting wise, he is spectacular, always putting good ABs in, hitting the ball the other way, especially at a weak hitting position (people forget SS usually is). Also, he is a tremendous leader and very clutch. The whole postseason leader in hits thing is really stupid to bring up, because he has had more ABs in the postseason than just about anyone as well, as the Yanks have only missed the postseason once under him (also kudos to him).

Bottom line, he is a HOFer on any team you put him on, but his numbers and his 'aura' is a little inflated because of the fact that he has been a Yankee his whole career, which goes along with the media helping him out, as well as an owner that wont mind spending more then anyone else.

This list, btw, is definitely ****. Anyone, ANYONE, who watches Youkilis play everyday knows hes not overrated. He should have won an MVP by now, he constantly is 1st or 2nd in OBP, always hits over 25 HRs, can play gold glove 1B and 3B, can hit for average, puts up a battle literally every AB (usually leads league in pitches per plate appearance), just overall a tremendous player. Him being number 5 is BOGUS. I can sorta see jeter, definitely A-Rod (AWFUL postseason numbers, strikes out a ton), definitely JD Drew, but not Youk by any means.</body>

<body>The key to all of these polls is the context. This is a poll of major league baseball players. It's not a poll of the media, nor is it a poll of average MLB fans or of MLB executives. Because of that, the context is unique to the MLB players.

Translation: What matters to players-- how they determine someone's value-- is by the money.

For those of you who are confused as to why J.D. Drew, Andruw Jones, or Zito are on the list, you find the explanation in one place-- their salaries.

Players will say that those people are overrated based on how much money they make. I'm not saying they are wrong nor am I making any comment on the list itself, really. Just making a point about why I think these are the names that come up the most.</body>

<body>How can you not say Derek Jeter is a GOOD player? Your argument has absolutely no credit if you are too myopic to see this. He is obviously not the best shortstop that has ever lived...but how many shortstops have won multiple titles and have a legitimate chance at 3000 hits? Get past yankees-red sox nation.....Derek Jeter is GOOD.....you are probably not knowledgeable about baseball......and stats speak for themselves.</body>

He may be overrated, that's still better than 98% of the league.

<body>i wholeheartedly agree. i personally dont like him (i admit it is sorta a jealousy thing but at least im man enough to admit it). however, even though he is a good player and leader, a singles hitting shortstop who is statistically proven to be one of the worst defensive everyday infielders in baseball is not a guy to build a team around now. he'd be a very good piece, but not ur main point of focus.</body>

<body>how about impressive attention to detail for you. the article very clearly said &amp;quot;SURVEY TAKEN JUNE 23, 2008&amp;quot; he was a dodger then. how bout you read everything it says b4 u say something like that. and wtf, carl pavano!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! the only thing id be starting with him is a disabled list. hes been solid this year, but its a matter of time. and why on God's green earth would you want to start a team around giambi and schilling. they were both in their late 30's with injury problems at the time. similar situation with jeter and arod. they were/are in their early 30's, and it is statistically proven that hitters start declining in production around age 33. why would u not pick pujols, hanley ramirez, mauer, lincecum, or really any other star not close to social security like giambi and schilling</body>
