I think they put too much emphasis on the pitch count. Too many times, a pitcher is left in too long or pulled too early based on the count and not the performance.

Are managers too strict on pitch count of their pitchers?

Yes ...... 48%
No ...... 52%

[Based on a survey of 465 MLB players]

FAST FACTS: Among pitchers, starters were much more likely to vote yes (56%) than were relievers (46%).... Injured Padre Jake Peavy (pitching elbow) had averaged a big league high 107.8 pitches per start through Sunday; the Angels' Ervin Santana led the AL at 107.5.... The Red Sox' Jon Lester threw 130 pitches, the most in the majors this year, in his no-hit win over Kansas City on May 19.... Tim Wakefield's 172 pitches over 10 innings as a Pirate against the Braves in 1993 is the most in a game by an active pitcher.... In '62 Washington Senator Tom Cheney threw a record 228 pitches in a 16-inning complete game win over the Orioles.

This is an MLB poll from the June 2, 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated.

What's your take on this poll?
