Which head coach would you most like to play for?

Phil Jackson, Lakers ....... 21%
Mike D'Antoni, Suns ....... 21%
Gregg Popovich, Spurs ....... 15%
Don Nelson, Warriors ....... 10%
Jerry Sloan, Jazz ....... 4%
Rick Adelman, Rockets ....... 3%
Doc Rivers, Celtics ....... 3%
Pat Riley, Heat ....... 3%
Avery Johnson, Mavericks ....... 3%
Nate McMillan, Trail Blazers ....... 3%

Based on a survey of 242 NBA Players

FAST FACTS:
Players could not vote for their own coach.... The Heat's Pat Riley and the Celtics' Doc Rivers, each of whom drew 3%, were the top vote-getters among Eastern Conference coaches.... Among players 30 and older Popovich was the winner, drawing 19% of that vote; Jackson got more than half of the rookie vote.... Each of the top five except Sloan has won a Coach of the Year award.

This is an expanded version of the NBA poll from the January 28, 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated.

What's your take on this poll?

I wonder who Kobe would have voted for if he had been traded to the Bulls.

January 23, 2008  03:11 PM ET

Mike D'Antoni

January 23, 2008  03:32 PM ET

Isiah Thomas not on the list? WTF!

January 23, 2008  05:13 PM ET

Oh definitely Phil Jackson, his records and accomplishments speaks for itself. I would rate him up there with Auraback of the celtics, lombardi of the Packers, and the Great Wizard of Westwood John Wooden.

January 23, 2008  05:47 PM ET

This is crazy, "Auraback",. Are you kidding me. First you compare a sub-par, triangle toting, wannabe monk to the greatest figures in their respective sports then you miss spell Auerbach. Step it up. P.S. Byron Scott is beast.

January 23, 2008  05:48 PM ET

Sloan is not the only member of the top five not to win "Coach of the Year." Phil has never won the award! There's something wrong with that. I guess that's the casualty of winning.

January 23, 2008  06:30 PM ET

Phil was Coach of the year in 1996

January 23, 2008  06:33 PM ET

Phil never won it because his success comes from his ability to effectively coach uber-talented teams. The coaches who win it (in theory) get the most out of a lesser talented roster, and/or who greatly exceed the expectations of the team.

January 23, 2008  06:47 PM ET

Again guys, Phil won it with the Bulls in 1996

PEACE

I'm surprised that the Current Coach of the Year 2007, Toronto's Sam Mitchell, did not make the list! -Most amusing...

Larry Brown, Jeff Van Gundy were both absent too. I'm surprised Doc Rivers made it there. Sure, he is with the re-born Celtics, but don't forget he has coached two teams with 14 game losing skids while under his watch! (Orlando Magic, and last years Celtics). I don't think Doc Rivers has what it takes to get championship ring. He has excellent players, but playoff basketball is a different beast altogether.

The last 15 seasons has seen veteran coaches with .500+ coaching averages... Doc Rivers does not have that...
(Phil Jackson, G. Poppovich, Tomjanovic, Riley, Brown... That's the last 15 years right there!!!

January 24, 2008  02:31 PM ET

Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich are clearly the head of the class as far as winning Titles, but there are many new masterminds coming into their own with fresh talent...Nate McMillan - with all that young talent putting it all together so fast and adding Greg Oden next year will only make them more dangerous, Sam Mitchell - 2007 Coach of the Year, and Eddie Jordan - getting the most out of his players on O and D w/o AllStar Arenas and a utility man Etan Thomas, the Wiz Kidz love playing for him.

January 24, 2008  08:50 PM ET

Phil Jackson. 11 rings in all. end of discussion

January 30, 2008  12:51 PM ET

This will be in an issue of Sports illustrated.

March 4, 2008  01:15 PM ET

I think some of you are confusing good coaching with I am so lucky that I have two fantastic players on my team. Maybe I'll meditate a while and let them win another title for me. Phil's greatest coaching skill...not getting in the way of the talent that is the real reason he has those rings.

March 4, 2008  08:41 PM ET

same could be said for pop, jpd....Duncan, Robinson, Ginobli, Parker...need I say more.

March 5, 2008  01:44 AM ET

only three guys on the list with coaching titles. interesting. guess these are the "young guns" in the up and comming coaching ranks.

People who criticize Phil by saying that he did it with supreme talent in deference to Auerbach seem to ignore the fact that Auerbach had the most dominant player of his day, Bill Russell. Digest this: at USF, Bill Russell's teams won 55 straight games and won 2 NCAA championships. After Russell I don't believe USF has won another tourney game, let alone a title.

Oh, there were also guys by the names of Bob Cousey, John Havlecek and some other guys I haven't heard of, but are HOFers on those teams. Also, Russell got injured in game 3 of the '59 finals which the Celtics went on to lose in 6 after splitting the first two to the Hawks.
