The trade rumors about Tampa Bay Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier are flying, with Montreal and Boston among the destinations. The Canadiens have been said to offer a package that includes forwards Chris Higgins and Tomas Plekanec, defenseman Josh Gorges, blue chip prospect P.K. Subban and draft picks.
SI.com's Jim Kelley writes that cash-strapped Lightning ownership needs to unload Lecavalier's 11-year, $85 million contract, and that gives their potential trading partners a distinct advantage and no need to offer anything more than taking the burden off Tampa Bay's books.
Meanwhile, SI.com's Michael Farber has written that the Montreal fishbowl is all wrong for Lecavalier, who is happy in Tampa and should say No to such a move. (His no-trade clause does not kick in until after the season, but he almost certainly would be consulted by Lightning management before a deal was made.)
What's your take on the situation? Should Tampa Bay trade Lecavalier? Given the Lightning's reportedly dire financial straits, what would you want your team to give up for him? If you're a Bolts fan, would you be outraged by a trade? And, lastly, if you're a Canadiens fan, could Lecavalier thrive in the glaring spotlight of his native city?
