Minor league teams are even worse with names. I've seen:

South Bend Silver Hawks
Lansing Lugnuts
Cedar Rapids Kernels

Boy, that was a Poe excuse for a joke.

There has been a disturbing trend these last few years of giving sports franchises really strange and/or stupid names.

Minnesota Wild? (Huh?)

Columbus Blue Jackets? (Now we're naming teams after an article of clothing?)

Baltimore Ravens? (Named after an Edgar Allen Poe poem? Egad!)

Arizona Diamondbacks? (Nothing says sports quite like a venomous snake!)

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (It just rolls off the tounge, doesn't it?)

The producer of the opening and closing ceremonies said that no one else in the world, except the North Koreans, could have performed those synchronized acts. It's amazing what practicing 18 hours a day for months, with the threat of going to prison or your family suffering, will do for one's 'volunteerism'...

Some day, sure, these Olympics are going to end. But this is not that day:

• The Redeem Team surged past Argentina 101-81 Friday to advance to the gold medal game against Spain on Sunday. Man, the Americans looked so good, it was like we'd invented the sport.

• Usain Bolt helped Jamaica set a world record in the 4x100 relay today, his third gold medal and world record of these Games. And hey, I know he was excited, but did he have to do the cabbage patch right in Jacques Rogge's grille? That seemed a bit much.

• Michael Phelps reportedly had a "hot make-out session" with Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice. Things didn't really progress past the kissing, though. I mean, have you tried getting out of those skintight bodysuits?

• The IOC wrapped up its "investigation" of the ages of several Chinese gymnasts after about a dozen hours of supposed digging on Friday, saying everything checked out and that the controversy should now be "put to rest." Yeah, right. How old do they think we are, 12?

• Four horses were banned from the Olympic jumping competition after testing positive for prohibited substances. Officials got suspicious after one of them was photographed giving pony rides at Jose Canseco's BBQ.

• One of O.J. Simpson's co-defendants in his armed robbery and kidnapping trial is asking for a separate trial. The man's lawyer contends that O.J. won't get a fair trial. In response, O.J. said, "I sure as hell hope not."

• Carl Pavano will start on the mound for the Yankees on Saturday in Baltimore. In related financial news, HMOs are a strong buy.
