Stelly - the whole "doesn't congress/feds have more important things to do than mess around in sports" arguement is easily answered: no. Why? Because the interest of the public/voters in these matters means that they are more important than other topics that people seem not to be near as passionate about (health care, national debt, some murder that didn't involve a rich white girl, etc.). Here at the 10 Spot, we're all broken up about the news that Barry Bonds has been indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice. Still, that didn't keep us from delivering the kind of hard-hitting investigative journalism that you've come to expect from this space. The 10 Spot has exclusively obtained this e-mail to Barry from his lawyer sent last night, soon after the charges came down. (Here's a look at the <a href="http://www.ktvu.com/download/2007/1115/14608977.pdf" target="_blank">indictment</a> itself.) We can't reveal our sources, unless of course a judge threatens us with jail time, in which case we'll fold like the 2007 Mets.Without further ado, here it is:Dear Barry,We both knew that today might come given how single-minded the feds have been in pursuing you. Come on, this whole BALCO sham was all about nailing you from the start. Victor Conte, Greg Anderson, Marion Jones, Tim Montogomery, Bill Romanowski, Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield, all those track guys who got banned, etc. -- obviously they were all just a diversion in laying a trap for you.But don't worry. We're still going to beat this thing. Heck, if lying was a crime, they'd lock up every lawyer in the country, right?First, we admit nothing. Nothing! These are just allegations, we look forward to vigorously proving your innocence, it's a shame the federal government has spent so much time and resources on this vendetta when there are real problems in this country, you've never tested positive for steroids -- whoops! OK, scratch that last one, but you get the idea. If, of course, we decide to take a plea bargain, we'll be ready with a heartfelt apology that completely glosses over the actual charges but gets you back on the road to image rehabilitation and commercial viability (see Vick, Mike). Still, let's not think about that yet.Topic No. 1, and I can't stress this enough, is to make sure that Greg Anderson remains a Barry Booster. The feds still have this crazy notion that he pumped you full of enough juice to bring down a herd of drunken elephants. We both know that's ludicrous, but we can't take any chances that Greg succumbs in a moment of weakness and takes the stand against you. And hey, the guy's already done you a major solid by sitting in jail for a year on your behalf. I'd say a new house and two late-model cars would be a nice start. (Though this time, try not to pay for the gifts with undeclared income from card shows, LOL!)It does seem the government might have one piece of evidence that will prove a tad ticklish -- this so-called positive steroids test from November of 2000. I'm not sure the "I thought it was flaxseed oil" defense is going to fly anymore on this one. Not to worry, though. As countless athletes before you have proved, a positive test means nothing but the start of a protracted legal battle.At the moment, I'd say our best approach would be the "Tyler Hamilton defense." You tell them you actually had an unborn identical twin, and that's who tested positive. Frankly, given how massive you are these days, the jurors will probably buy that you simply swallowed up your twin. Or we take advantage of your well-established selfishness to suggest you simply kept all sustenance for yourself in the womb. If nothing else, jurors will be so confused by our scientific experts that they'll be finding "reasonable doubt" in no time.Some other potential theories to consider: a) you drank heavily the night before the test like Floyd Landis; b) we make a lot of noise about the "B sample"; c) we blame the French.We should also point out that baseball didn't even test for steroids at the time, so you did nothing wrong. OK, sure, maybe steroids were and are technically illegal without a valid prescription, but since when should professional athletes be subject to the same laws as everyone else? That's madness! (And that reminds me -- let's see if we can scare up some Internet dentist or something to say he wrote you a prescription.
