Beanie Wells rumbled for 168 yards against Wisconsin.
AP

Much has been written in recent weeks about Terrelle Pryor, including by me. Following his game-winning heroics against Wisconsin, we're likely to hear even more. ESPN even named the quarterback its player of the game for Ohio State, which is fine, except ... DID YOU NOT WATCH BEANIE WELLS?

For most of Saturday night's showdown in Madison, the Badgers did an exceptional job containing the Buckeyes' freshman phenom. Every time you thought Pryor was about to break a big run, there was a Wisconsin defender to meet him at the line of scrimmage. (Pryor gained 20 yards on 15 attempts). And when he passed, the Badgers often forced him to go deep into his progressions, which, not surprisingly, proved difficult for the freshman.

But stopping Pryor is only half the battle for Ohio State's opponents. You've now got to deal with a healthy Wells. Somehow, the same guy whose toe once caused a week's worth of news coverage fell off the radar these past few weeks. But there he was Saturday night, rushing 22 times for 168 yards and a touchdown. It was his highest yardage total since last year's Michigan game.

Think Jim Tressel might be happy to have him back?

Janus: You said "I'm glad Tressel is always calm and flat because it gives the team a baseline to go to" and I don't disagree that in many cases that's good, but I also think the coach can be a catalyst when needed (and when it isn't happening from elsewhere on the team). I certainly wouldn't want Tressel to be out of control, but at the same time I don't think him being more emotional would cause any less stability. It could ADD some with the energy it provides. In any case, it's really a moot point since he is who he is (and again, I think he's a great coach). At the very least, hopefully we can get a little less predictable, especially given that we've now got lots of ways to be offensive :) .

Rockhound,

I would think that as a head coach, the program would mimic the demeanor of the head coach. I'll contrast the Buckeyes with LSU and USC. Both of those teams have very emotional coaches, and both teams play emotionally. I'm not sure one is of preference to the other, because of this:

1. While USC and LSU have certainly won (nay, destroyed their competition) in the "big" games, they have all had "emotional letdowns" (the SEC and USC fans' words, not mine), which have resulted in losses to obviously inferior opponents.

2. Ohio State doesn't seem able to "get up" for the big games, but they are very methodical in winning the games they are "supposed to."

In Carroll's case, the team having that letdown has resulted in USC being left out of the National Championship game. In OSU's case, it's resulted in the Buckeyes being emotionally inferior to their opponents when the NC is on the line. So, much like the chicken and the egg question, would you rather your team lose a game it should win and be left out of the big dance, or win the games they should but lose the big game badly? (And no, the best of both worlds is not an option in this hypothetical.)

I think its more of a problem of team emotion and attitude. I've said this in previous posts, but I'm glad Tressel is always calm and flat because it gives the team a baseline to go to. Yes the players could play more emotionally, but right now I think they should stick to basics. I think our D is able to (or should be able to) mold to the team they're playing. Against Troy, they were playing against a no huddle spread offense. Against Wisconsin, a power run, two TE team. I did notice the D struggling more last night tan their previous games. I think the teams biggest problems is how fast they can all become unglued. One player makes a mistkae, the other team siezes the momentum (like after the interception last night) and although I don't think they blame each other for their mistakes, its apparent that they lose mental focus. Its like they're focusing on the mistakes, and not focusing on the plays. Illinois cashed in on that last season. They lose the ability to finish, just like last years 2nd half at LSU. When that happens, I'm glad we don't have an emotional coach, so while some people see it as a negative, I think its positive, but that doesn't mean Tressel could play less conservative.

In its preseason, Penn State thumped Oregon State who beat USC when it was ranked #1. Penn State also blew away Syracuse on the road, and when Pitt (who just beat #10 USF) played at Syracuse, it was actually behind at the half 13-17, before going on to win 34-24. Penn State won 55-13, and was up 21-0 in the 1st quarter and it was 38-6 at the half. Penn State didn't play the hardest non-conference schedule, I'll give you that; BUT they did crush every single opponent like you would expect from a team of its caliber. They're dominant on both sides of the ball. I would say right now Penn State is playing more like the fourth best team than the sixth best team. I'm fine admitting that about my team, because I don't want them to peak too early, which is what I think has been the case with a lot of teams that have fallen lately.

<quoted-text>Ohio State is not good enough to beat PSU on the road, but luckily for the Buckeyes they won't have to accomplish that feat. PSU is 0-7 at the 'Shoe since joining the Big 10. I think OSU wins that game, and I think we will see two 11-1 Big Ten teams in the Rose bowl and the Fiesta Bowl this year.</quoted-text>

Keep holding on to that faith in your home-field advantage giving the Buckeyes an automatic win over the Nittany Lions. Illinois fans (yes they exist) tell me that there's nothing better than having the Buckeyes discount you because you're playing them in the horseshoe...

Even with Wells' performance, the Buckeyes found themselves down 17-13 with 6:31 remaining. That's when Pyror seemed to elevate his game. On a 14-play, 80-yard drive, Pryor made four huge plays. On third and 6, he stood tall in the pocket and found Brian Hartline for a 19-yard strike. Two plays later, he hit a wide-open Hartline over the middle for 27 yards. After losing 4 yards on a first down at Wisconsin's 24, he hit Roy Small for a 13-yard gain.

And then came the winning play, one that will undoubtedly strike fear in the hearts of future OSU opponents. Is there any scarier scenario than Pryor and Wells running the option? Wisconsin bit and headed straight for Wells, leaving Pryor to run nearly untouched for an 11-yard touchdown.

Pryor showed the necessary poise to win a tough game on the road. He made few glaring freshman mistakes. He managed the game well. But the reality is, Ohio State does not win that game -- and Pryor most likely doesn't score that touchdown - without the threat of Beanie in the backfield.

The Buckeyes' victory likely put an end to Wisconsin's Big Ten title hopes. The Badgers already have two losses. The best they can hope to do is play spoiler when Penn State comes to town next weekend.

There's a pretty good chance the Big Ten title will be decided Oct. 25 when the No. 6 Nittany Lions visit Columbus. We'll find out that night which is the more powerful weapon: The Spread HD or Beanie?
