Just let it go, Ben. Just let it go.
Ben Mauk, the former Cincinnati quarterback, was turned down by the NCAA for the sixth and final time in his attempt to get back together with the Bearcats for a sixth year of eligibility and Mauk's lawyer, Kevin Murphy, says he'll be resuming his attempt to overturn the NCAA in court.
It's officially time for an intervention. Hey, it worked for Bailey Salinger. Oh, it didn't? Well, anyway, it's worth a shot:
Ben, have a seat. You've been acting a little crazy lately and there's some things you need to hear. I know it's going to be tough but it's for your own good.
You're playing the role of a psycho ex-girlfriend here. Have you seen Cincinnati lately? UC's looking pretty happy with on-again/off-again Dustin Grutza at quarterback. Didn't want to tell you this, but I saw Cincy and Grutza holding hands walking into Skyline Chili the other day, right after he passed for 296 yards and three touchdowns in the rout of Eastern Michigan. They looked good together ... real good. I know this will be hard to take, but they're taking a big trip to Oklahoma together this weekend (the Sooner state is for lovers, you know).
You just have to face it, Cincy has moved on. This "will he or won't he be back" stuff is just a distraction that won't do anybody any good at this point. The season has started and Cincy and Dustin make a pretty cute couple (though there's some gossip that UC is making eyes at athletic backup Demetrius Jones). If you were to come back into Cincy's life, it probably wouldn't be until the start of those Big East farmer's markets (which includes trips to UConn, Louisville and West Virginia and USF at home) and you haven't seen any action in months. You'd just be putting Cincy in a tough, tough spot, Ben and it's not fair to you, UC or Dustin.
So Ben, just let Cincinnati go. Don't call. Don't send any e-mails and don't drive around UC's cul-de-sac late at night trying to see if the lights are on in their bedroom. You put up a good fight and you may believe that you belong together but this relationship is over, Ben. I know the wounds are still fresh, but maybe you should try the Arena League: flashy clothes and fast-paced. Sounds like a sure-thing for a guy on the rebound.
