so tell us why Tech's defense is no hwere near OU's...unless you meant better than?

Crabtree and Harrell didn't play the fourth quarter...and the reason the went for it on fourth sown is evidenced by pulling a kid off the street to kick extra points... they have no field goal kicker...

So, your preference would have been to pull Harrell at halftime? No team does that...

are you actually a head coach? That would be a shame, because you should be nowhere near kids with that kind of stupid sexism. It was a fine article. She did a good job. I didn't even look at the picture or realize it was a woman until you made your comment.

Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell had four touchdown in Tech's first five possessions Saturday against Kansas. :: AP

Before today's game at Kansas, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach told reporters he wasn't concerned about the upcoming four-game stretch against ranked opponents. The number in front of a team's name "really doesn't make any difference," Leach said. It seemed like a dubious claim for two reasons. First, the biggest knock against the undefeated and eighth-ranked Red Raiders was that they'd yet to play, and thus prove themselves against, a top 25 team. Secondly, any sane coach, even one supremely confident in his team's ability, would have to be a tad skiddish about facing No. 19 Kansas, No. 1 Texas, No. 7 Oklahoma State and No. 4 Oklahoma in a row. But clearly, Leach meant it, and clearly, his Red Raiders believed it.

Tech probably wouldn't have silenced its critics if it had merely squeaked out a win against Kansas, but this 63-21 pummeling should do the trick. Granted, Kansas hasn't been immune to "overrated" claims, either. The Jayhawks faced two top 25 teams before today (South Florida and Oklahoma) and lost both times. So in theory, the jury's still out, and there's little doubt Texas, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma will challenge Tech more than Kansas did today.

But whether or not the real tests still lie ahead, Tech made a statement today. Midway through the first quarter, Kansas and Tech had 14 points a piece and the game seemed certain to live up to its shootout-billing. But then quarterback Graham Harrell and the Tech offense catapulted into another dimension of offensive productivity. At the end of the first half, Tech had five touchdowns on six possessions, and probably would have scored on the sixth possession had time not expired. Harrell used his endless time in the pocket and his slew of offensive weapons to his advantage and left at the start of the fourth quarter after amassing five touchdowns and 386 yards. Indeed, as the third quarter progressed and common sense indicated Harrell would soon move to the sidelines, one had to wonder if he'd finish with more touchdowns than incomplete passes. (He didn't, but at five-to-eight, it was close.)

Tech didn't need any help, but Kansas gave it plenty. As soon as Kansas failed to answer on its third possession, things began unraveling. It took QB Todd Reesing and the Jayhawks more than two quarters to cross midfield after that. Most alarmingly, though, Kansas ran five plays in the third quarter, and three resulted in Darcel McBath interceptions.

Tech's defense showed something today, too. Though the unit has only let up more than 30 points once this season, it's earned a bit of a reputation as a potential Achilles heel down the homestretch. Maybe Reesing and Kansas deserve the blame for pressing and coughing up the ball five times. Maybe McBath deserves the credit for playing like a man possessed. Either way, Tech shut down a Kansas offense that's proven how robust it can be time and time again. Let's not forget the Jayhawks put up 76 against Nebraska during last year's more pleasant homecoming.

Right now, special teams is be Tech's most pressing concern. Donnie Carona missed another field goal today. But even here, there's good news. Former field goal contest winner Matt Williams made his Red Raiders debut today and converted all nine extra point attempts (Tech has had six point-afters blocked this season).

Either Texas or Oklahoma State will fall to third in the Big 12 South after tonight's matchup, so Tech's sitting pretty in the conference and national title race. Sure, three top 10 duals remain, but as Leach knows, a ranking's just a number.
