COLUMBUS, Ohio -- People are always telling me I have the "coolest job," writing about college football and what not. I used to agree with them -- until today.
That title hereby belongs to Dan Rubenstein, a.k.a., The SI Tour Guy. If you've never watched one of Dan's videos from the road, you're missing out. He visits a different campus every weekend, mingling with and interviewing tailgaters with his always unique set of questions. The videos are usually three minutes of laugh-out-loud humor.
Dan's been doing his gig for three years, but today marked the first time he and I wound up at the same game -- Penn State-Ohio State. On a crisp, beautiful fall day along the banks of the Olentangy, I tagged along with Dan and his camera guy, Dave Strumpf, as they visited with various Buckeye crazies.
When I asked Dan how he goes about picking which fans to interview, he told me: "The hot chicks and the crazy-looking ones." Sadly, we mostly encountered the crazy-looking ones. From what I gathered, Dan's work day consists of the following:
1. Approach tailgaters with camera and microphone and ask if they want to appear on SI.com.
2. Ask said tailgaters silly questions and respond on the fly to their unpredictable answers.
3. Get the tailgaters to sign release forms.
4. Eat their free food (the best part).
During my short time with Dan, I got to sample some delicious beef brisket, tortilla chips and homemade dip and a brownie. If I had chosen to truly gorge, hamburgers, hot dogs and chili were also available for the taking.
And here's why his job is ultimately cooler than mine: Eventually, I had to leave, come up to the press box and write this article -- and more to follow. Dan? He packed up the equipment, moved on to another group of tailgaters and prepared to repeat steps 1 through 4.
However, I'm excited to report that I got to make a cameo appearance on this week's episode (see accompanying picture). You'll have to come back to SI on Campus or SI.com's video section on Tuesday and see how it all turned out.
