Who cares about basketball? Let me know when WVU has the best bowl-winning percentage in the nation (PSU does now) and then we can talk. Right now, WVU's percentage is not in the top ten. Does "WVU and the Seven Dwarfs" sound at all like I'm dumping on the Mountaineers. If you read the posts, you'll see that I hope that the Mountaineers take Pitt to the woodshed. WVU just needs to consider changing conference affiliation. The ACC would be a good fit. WVU and Maryland are already rivals and you could always play Pitt OOC. Hey, this is just a thought. You do know that automatic BCS bids can be changed, don't you?

The ACC would never take WVU because they're a tier 3 school -- whether the minutia of those rankings is important to you or not. Although necessity could bring about such a move. For example, if the Big Ten ever goes to 12 teams, unless that 12th member is Notre Dame, which will never happen, then it will cause a new chain reaction of conference realignment. Only in those circumstances will the ACC take on a lower tiered school. WVU, although their major athletic programs are good, don't bring much to the table when it comes to academics, demographics, or money. In regards to the conference losing its BCS bid, it's not going to happen. The BCS contract gives automatic bids to the winners of the six best conferences based on winning over an extended period of time. That's why the Pac-10 won't lose their bid after one down year; it's why the ACC won't lose the BCS bid despite having won only one BCS game all-time (FSU's national title in 2000). The Big East has had a down year because some of their teams got off to slow (WVU & Pitt) or bad (Rutgers) starts and Syracuse has just been awful. The BE has an 11-8 bowl record since Miami & VT left, including 8-2 the last two seasons; this conference isn't going anywhere.

However, Butch Davis went to UNC and is turning it around; Erickson went to Oregon State and then Arizona State; even Zook revived a dormant Illinois team.

But now they're a horrible program that will never win anything ever again and a coach would have to be dumb to take the job? One bad hire and they go from a not-elite-but-pretty-good-and-respectable program to Baylor?

Syracuse has one major advantage: They're not in the Big XII South. Whoever takes the job will instantly become the third-best coach in the conference...second if Brian Kelly leaves. The BE is god awful right now. It will not take a miracle worker to make Syracuse competitive.

Basketball and baseball exist to fill the void between football seasons. First, the Lions uniforms ---- I agree that they need to change, but that's not going to happen until the guy with the thick glasses is gone ---- nothing gaudy, but a blue stripe up the pants and a Lion's head logo on the helmut would be good.

Second, I've had season tickets at Beaver Stadium for about 30 years. When the Lions played as an eastern independent, you could easily take a snooze after the Lions scored the 7th or 8th touchdown of the afternoon ---- boring! Now, many Big Ten games are actually competitive and exciting. So, as far as joining the Big Ten being a mistake, quite to the contrary, I would not have it any other way.

That brings us to my distain for the Big East. That stems, primarily, from my strong dislike for one of the members. If you read the posts above, you may be able to figure out which one.
I will take shots at them any way that I can, including trashing their conference. I never intended to offend anyone from WVU ---- that's why I called the Big East "WVU and the Seven Dwarfs." The series with the strongly disliked team needs to start again so that I can vent on that team and not on their conference.

Of course Ran doesn't care about basketball, as a PSU fan you'd be catatonic and suicidal.

And why all the hate about the Big East? I'm guessing because you realize the error in joining up with the Big 10, which was supposed bestow on Boring Uniform School an annual path to the National Championship game by winning the conference, which, well...hasn't exactly panned out that way.

Why aren't you over at some of the Big 10 sites, taking your lumps for making the Big 10 look like chumps again this year?

I'm as big a Buckeyes' fan as you'll find, but RAN0763, this is a whole glass house/stones thing. Don't forget we're in the Big10, which isn't exactly the greatest, most competitive conference out there.

This year, in order, is BigXII, SEC, Pac10, Big10, ACC/Big East (I'm not sure which is the worst). But cheering for a team in a weak Big10 - and we're a distant 4th behind Pac10, doesn't put you in a good position.

We lost one in eight games to Pitt. How will we ever find the courage to face the Panthers again? Let's just say that Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Michigan State are bigger fish to fry. Then again, Pitt could agree to the 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 venue deal and then you can, once again, put one in the loss column nearly every season.

Must exhibit a fondness for domed stadiums and cold, dreary weather. Benefits include an apathetic fan base, average facilities and divisive athletic director.

On the heels of Greg Robinson's long-expected firing Sunday, the question isn't, "Who will Syracuse hire to replace him?" It's "Who would be dumb and/or sadistic enough to take that job?"

It took less than 24 hours for the school's reported top candidate, Connecticut's Randy Edsall, to give his alma mater the Heisman. Once upon a time, a coach at UConn would have come running to Syracuse, but in 2008, Edsall -- who makes a reported $1.3 million, works in brand-new offices and a four-year-old stadium and will soon make his third bowl appearance in five years -- has a better job where he's at.

It's also been speculated for some time that Syracuse might target Buffalo coach Turner Gill, a logical premise seeing as Gill is already in the state and has been nothing short of miracle-worker in taking one of the nation's worst programs to the brink of a possible division title. (Buffalo is currently 6-4, 4-2 in the MAC.) It's entirely possible Gill would be eager to jump from the MAC to the Big East. But here's the thing: Gill can do better. Much better.

Syracuse's best hope of landing a coach capable of restoring the once-proud Orange to their proper glory -- or at least the right side of .500 -- is to find an energetic, ambitious assistant both itching to become a head coach and dynamic enough to sell blue-chippers on a program that, quite frankly, doesn't have much to offer right now. That person most certainly needs to have his fingers on the pulse of the Northeast recruiting scene.

The New York Times posted a list of potential candidates Sunday night, and two names immediately jumped to mind: Mike Locksley and Steve Addazio.

Locksley, 39, a Washington, D.C., native, is Illinois' offensive coordinator and the driving force behind Ron Zook's recruiting success both there and at Florida. He lured star receiver Arrelious Benn (a D.C. native) to Champaign and landed several key members of Florida's 2006 national title team.

Addazio, 49, Urban Meyer's offensive line coach at Florida, was a Syracuse assistant during the Donovan McNabb era (1995-98). Last month, former Orange star Rob Konrad penned a letter on behalf of several former teammates urging AD Daryl Gross to consider Addazio, whose pipeline into the New Jersey talent scene would be invaluable at Syracuse.

Of course, that brings us back to the original question. While the Syracuse head coaching job would garner a huge pay raise, is the assistant head coach position at Florida is arguably a better (and safer) job? I think so. If I'm Gross, I'm making that call to Locksley.
